-- Continued hotsync problems (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2363)
I've been having hotsynce problems for a month. Handspring replaced the cradle once and now the second serial cradle won't sync after 3 days! I'm running NT4.0 on a Dell laptop. Help!!!!
One of the tech's at Handspring told me that, too. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Handspring has other problems likely to cause syncing errors. If you're lucky, here's the easiest answer:
Do a soft reset of the unit. Try it again. That may do it. I have found that sometimes a reboot of the desktop computer helps too.

My Visor also stopped syncing after about 2 weeks. I did a soft reset and it started to HotSync just fine
I've tried the soft reset and nothing happens. I've tried reloading the software, reducing the speed and still nothing. I've also heard nothing more from Handspring including a message I sent to Walt O'Dowd.
I'm ready for a Palm again.
I was having now problems syncing with my visor for about 6-7 weeks. I'm using USB on my Mac and a serial cradle on my IBM. All of a sudden about a week ago I couldn't sync on either. I did a soft reset and can now sync on my mac with the USB, (although it continues to take forever to do it, aka waiting forever at the Identifying user stage) but I still can't sync on the IBM. I've tried switching COM ports, and reinstalling the desktop software to no avail. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Booting computer with visor in cradle caused my DVx to stop hotsynching. After soft reset it's fine.
I've just received my 3rd cradle from Handspring and now I can sync again. Let's see how long this lasts!
I had major problems with my Visor, however, once I removed the following applications, things are working well. The list:
BugMe v2.7.3
Blockparty v1
AlbumToGo v1.0.0
TealPaint v3.08
UnDupe v1.6
I had to hard reset the unit, and reload my data.

As of this morning, I began having the same HotSynch woes as everyone else in this forum. Fortunately, I was able to learn from these discussions and "fix" the problem with a quick soft reset. Feeling rather proud of myself, I enjoyed the visor for the rest of the day, until I tried to HotSynch a little later, and the same thing happened. Once again, a soft reset fixed the problem.
My question is this: Are there any long term drawbacks of such frequent soft resets (1-2 per day)? Anyone who has been experiencing this for awhile, or someone from Handspring tech support, please set my mind at ease!!
Having used the Visor for 2 months, I've noticed that it tends to run into Hotsync problems if I press the cradle Hotsync button too quickly (ie. <1 sec) after placing it into the cradle. Maybe the Visor-computer connection needs a few secs to stabilize, but nothing that a soft reset can't fix.
In answer to your question: yes, I seem to remember from a previous post that each time a soft reset is done, an additional copy of your Shortcuts in the Preferences application is created and added into the Saved_Preferences.prc file. Having done about 20 soft resets (really my fault for using a lot of hacks and Afterburner), I have noticed this file has increased from 1K to 10K(!) and that it takes increasingly longer to open the Shortcuts screen.

You're right about the duplicate shortcuts. Fortunately, there is a free program available that eliminates them. It's called DBScan and it's available from the Datebook3 site--http://www.gorilla-haven.org/pimlico.
It's a very small program and takes about a second to run.
Hope this helps.
Well, as I posted on 2/7, I received my 3rd cradle which lasted 3 days. Tried hotsyncing this morning and nothing again. Tried soft reset and nothing.
Am buying a Palm today.
I've a theory that really dry conditions may create a static electricity problem that is impacting syncing. I'll understand that you are sick of things, and don't want to mess with a theory . . . but here goes.
Try humidifying the room. Don't get it to the point where you've got condensation on the screen or anything. If you've got a relative humidity gauge, try for 50%.
I've got sinus conditions, and use a room humidifier much of the time anyway. The one time that I had problems syncing, the relative humidity was very low; and I hadn't run the humidifier for a day or so. Since then, I haven't had any further problems. Yes. It is just as likely that my problem was fixed by the soft-reset that I did. Sorry. I broke the rules, and made two corrections at the same time.
BTW, you have removed all DAs and Hacks right?
