-- Quikwriting vs. Graffiti? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=71)
Hi.
I wondered if anyone has (or knows of someone who has) installed and used Quikwriting on their Palm?
As a currently PDA-challenged individual, I've been trying to catch up w/ Palmistry while I wait for my Visor to arrive. I've practiced my Graffiti at
http://www.palm.com/products/input/index.html
And I stumbled across Quikwriting at http://www.mrl.nyu.edu/perlin/demos/quikwriting.html
and practice that at http://www.mrl.nyu.edu/perlin/demos/Quikwrite2_0.html
Has anyone put in the time (or tried) to learn Quikwrite? Any comments? I'm kinda intrigued, and would love to be able to enter text fast enough to replace pen&paper notetaking w/out having to lug a keyboard around.
(and on an entirely different matter, does anyone think that American Express banner flashing over the discussion boards has skewed our choices of Visor color? Just curious...)

John,
I haven't used quickwriting but here are some other reviews on input programs you might want to check out.

Maybe they'll help.

I have been following quikwriting since it was mentioned on /. I just got done testing 2.0. I love the idea. I believe (like others on the mailing list) that it was out of calibration, and there is no way to calibrate it.
They have done a great job of incorporating some of the missing functionality into this release (shortcuts, command...), but it does not work in pop-ups. What that means is it is useless in BrainForest, Find, Expense, ...
So I would say it is almost there. Those guys are doing a great job.
I looked at quikwriting. Although i haven't tried it but it seems to hard to use. I think that graffiti isn't that slow. So i really dont like quikwrite.
I've never heard of QuikWrite before, but i just checked it out, and WOW. I think it's a fantastic idea. Clearly a slower learning curve, but clearly it could ultimately be a MUCH faster way of entering data. Hell, I'd use it on my desktop if I could. My guess is it would be a boon for RSI sufferers as well.
I initially thought QuikWriting was a cool idea. But I saw it a year after I bought my first Palm and was already deeply entrenched in the Graffiti. Almost needless to say, I prefer Graffiti.
This is one instance where I believe the KISS principle applies: Keep It Simple, Stupid (no offense intended). You already know how to write in English. Use it. You can use an 'L' for an 'L', and 'M' for an 'M', etc. Some letters aren't complete letters necessarily, but they're close and easy to remember.
Graffiti isn't a terribly difficult system to learn. If you need to, you can grab a copy of TealScript to tweak the recognition a bit. Or you can grab Jot, if you want a few more writing options that are pretty intuitive.
