There are two OD's around me, and both had different prices for everything. One store had the 8MB flash module for $25, the backup module and Tiger Woods for 8 (but they were all out). The other store has the flash module for $50 and Tiger Woods for $20. From what I've seen here, pricing seems to be pretty much up to the local store manager.

Does anyone know how much the actual Visor Handhelds cost now? I'd greatly appreciate it if someone would tell me.

I'm so sad. Just came from the only Office Depot around me and they ran out last week! I missed out because I wasn't keeping up on my visorcentral readings Taught me a lesson

Did you have them look up the sku for price or just look at the floor display?

I went to my local Office Depot & of course all the PDA's were sold out. I did get a Total Recal springboard for $24: Not a huge bargain, but a good one. The Stowaways were still there at $49 but the manager didn't want to cut any deals to get rid of them...

$49 is half the cost of a normal stowaway... It's rare to even find a used stowaway at $49!

and a $24 targus recall is 1/4 the cost of it retail $99. I think you had a bargain there! I wouldn't call it not so much of a deal

Too bad that Office Depot does not/did not carry dictionary/thesaurus springboards. I sure would like one of them for 1/2 price or less.

Exclamation Thank You!! SEARCH BY SKU!

I went back with the SKU numbers in hand, and the first OD I went to "found" them. I can't believe I didn't try this earlier - persistence pays. Here are all the SKU's I could find - go to you nearest OD for a shot, I'll check the other ones and see if I can pass some of the savings on...:

Total Voice Recorder
785-281 $25

Stowaway Keyboard
785-301 $50

Back-up Module
785-391 $12

Stylus
785-571

Tiger Woods Module
785-951 $9

The Office Depot in Tampa, FL on Dale Mabry has:

3 Prism Cradles - $14.99
6 8MB Flash Modules - $23.99
2 Total Recalls - $24.99
4 Stowaway Keyboards - $49.99
8 Visor Serial Cradles - $14.99
5 Edge Cradles - didn't write down price.

Unfortunately I went hunting for a eyemodule2 for the wife....no luck.

Talking just be diligent

two office depots within a 5-mile radius of my home (three in the city, more a little further away, but free time was the limiting factor).

the first one had nothing but cradles and TONS of leather cases. i might have purchased a leather case for my visor deluxe, but i just want something to protect the visor and look stylish, not to hold my checkbook, cash, business cards, spare key, etc. i might have bought an extra/spare cradle, but they were only for the edge and prism (i think), so of value to me. great prices though. i asked the girl behind the customer service counter if all their handspring related merchandise was on the clearance table and she said "yeah, probably". taking her word for it i left asked where the other stores were located in the area. she directed me to the next closest one, so off i went.

the second one had the same selection. no modules (which is what i was looking for; that's the whole reason i bought my visor deluxe, besides the fact it was only $99 at tigerdirect.com ), but plenty of leather cases and cradles. discouraged i decided to walk around the store just to see what there was. i had taken the time to drive to two different stores, so i figured i might as well take a few minutes to see what else office depot had to offer me. everything else in the store that i saw was overpriced compared to what i could pay online at a store like newegg.com. well, there was a good deal or two ($15 logitech optical usb mouse), but nothing that i needed/wanted.

then i happened upon a glass case in the middle of the store, where the high dollor items are kept under lock. and there it was: a lone targus stowaway keyboard for visors (pa-800u). there was no price on the box, or price tag on the shelf (as with all the other products), so i spoke to a passing "sales assistant" and she went to get someone to open the case and investigate. a different girl returned with a key but she couldn't get the lock to pop open. so she got the manager. (actually, she said she would get the manager's key, but instead she called the manager, but expecting her to specifically return, i wondered an isle or two over, played with the compaq ipaqs, not bad but my price point was/is $100, not $500, which is more than i paid for my used thinkpad, but i eventually met up with her and the manager, though i almost gave up and left.) there was no price on the keyboard, so the manager had the girl ring it up at the front of the store while the manager and i waited at the display. while she was gone i told the manager that i was more interested in any modules than this keyboard, but if they keyboard was a good deal i would buy it anyways. he confirmed that all the modules were sold out. she returned and said the keyboard was $50. i said that was too much for something i didn't even really want and thanks for looking up the price. the manager reminded me that even at $50 that was a very good deal. i told him that to me it wasn't worth that much (doesn't have much utility, which is the true value/price-point of a good/service; thanks economics 101 ). he said if the item was discontinued that he would discount it further. we all three went to the customer service desk and she rang it up. well enough, it was discontinue (actually, he said "non-restockable" or something like that meaning that the store was not carrying that product anymore, not that the manufacturer had discontinued the product; sorry for any confusion), so he said he would sell it for X. i told him, "make it Y and i'll buy it" (where Y = X - $5). he said okay, and i bought it.

moral of the story: not much available at some office depots, depending on what you are looking for. and you may have to be diligent if you want to find the deals. (but isn't that always the case.)

p.s. wondering how much i paid for it? you'll have to buy the receipt (and the still-sealed keyboard) from me to find out. i'm selling the keyboard (as i never really wanted it but instead want to buy a pitech smartmedia memplug), and including the receipt with it for warranty/return/exchange purposes. (if it breaks within the targus 1-year warranty period, and you need proof of purchase, maybe to verify the warranty period, you can provide the receipt. if they ask why you aren't the one listed on the receipt, tell them it was a gift. just don't tell them how much you paid me for the receipt to get the keyboard as a "free gift". ) trying to figure out how much i want to sell it for (taking into consideration the price of new/used stowaways & the cost of a memplug + 64MB smartmedia ), so keep an eye on the marketplace forum, or email me an offer.

i would have gladly paid near full price for a smartmedia memplug because that is something that i perceive as having much utility/use/value. (that and since i can't find it at any store, online or b&m, new for < $50, i would consider anything less than full price a bargain and purchased it.)

the keyboard on the other hand is not something that i perceive myself as using. i didn't recently purchase my visor to input great gobs of text, nor do i want to carry around a keyboard in my other pants pocket (as one pocket is already full with the visor). if i need to enter lots of text, like populating my brand new password database with all my current passwords, then i use pose on my laptop/desktop and upload the resulting database it to my visor. so, even though the keyboard may cost more than what i purchased it for, and may be worth a lot to other people, i don't have much need for it. but then again, i didn't buy it necessarily because i wanted it, but because it was a great deal that i couldn't pass up. (i know, i know: how compulsive of me.) and for the record, if you (re)read my post, i didn't initiate the haggling down of the price; the manager did.

thinking about it, i'm surprised the office depot employees (or maybe even their friends & family) don't/didn't snatch up everything (or maybe that's why the two stores i visited had no selection of anything useful, and they simply overlooked the keyboard ) and sell it online. purchase a keyboard for $50 (and that's not even discounted/haggled), sell it online for $70. office depot employee makes $20, some visor owner saves $20 off the average online price (a little over $90 appears to be the average at pricegrabber.com). it's a win-win situation.

You know I was thinking the same thing but when I went into the one store and mentioned handspring Visor the guy looked at me like I had two heads He sort of acted like he never heard much about them and judging by the number of keyboards still under lock and key most of the other employees must be clueless too! It was hard to figure out how much really sold out quickly because Office depot in our area never really had a big variety of Handspring products to start with.

Stowaway sighted at Chicago OD store

Stowaway: Just a tip for someone searching for the vanishing stowaway keyboards. I found one for $29.88, and the next day (this morning actually) I found another one hiding in the clearance bins at a different store. This one cost $50. It's in the bottom of the leftmost plastic crate in the clearance area, front of store at Lincoln Village mall at McCormick and Lincoln in Chicago (north side.) No GPS coordinates available, sorry.

Cases: There were also several soft leather zip cases designed to hold the Visor (probably not for the Edge though.) The cases held a pad of paper and had pockets for credit cards. There were at least a dozen of these, cost was around $20, not a great deal IMO. The cases are made in China and the quality seemed acceptable.

A version of the case had an additional zip compartment with wide elastic straps to hold springboard modules, and whatever else could be stuffed in the compartment. Not quite room for a stowaway from what I could tell. There were 2 or 3 of these left, priced at $31 or so. Still not an amazing deal but stalk 'em a while and they'll probably go down.

Calling stores is advisable. I was lucky to find a smart and helpful employee. I found the 2nd stowaway at a store where an employee had supposedly looked while I waited on the phone.

good luck!

The Office Depot's in Omaha are nearly empty of all Visor products. All Visors and Springboards are gone. Only a few cases and Stowaway keyboards at one and a Skytel wireless modem at another. The reps there say that they are making room for the HP Journada and have such a Palm backlog that they need to move, that they need the space.

Lightbulb OD pricing tip

I hit the two stores in Sac yesterday for modules and got a tip from a very helpful asst mgr. If the store is down to the last item, the mgr can use their decretion and lower the price to move the item out. It can be the case for more stock, but she said if the have 2 or more they are following the price guidelines as noted in earlier posts. Magellan GPS went for full $150 in Sac... did not discount.

I scored:
- Tiger Woods module 2 wks ago for $8.50
- Stowaway keyboard for $49
- Total Recall recorder for $20
- Zipper case that holds visor in clip and has a second zippered fold for modules, incl notepad etc. Has extra clips for Edge, Prism and Dlx, Platinum - $16

Just a quick note to "undefined" ... as well as anyone else who is interested. So "undefined", you mention the memplug unit a couple of times in your posts -- and it sounds like you want one -- but are hoping to find one for less than $50. Well, you're in luck if it's the SmartMedia version that you're looking for. www.amazon.com has it going for $42.49 right now. There's no tax at Amazon ... and there are typically a lot of $5 off coupons floating around. The $5 discount would cancel out your shipping costs -- and you'll have the unit delivered to your door for no more than $42.49.

Or, throw on the Sandisk (good brand from all I've heard) 64MB SmartMedia card for $39.99 -- use a $10 of a $75 purchase coupon, and you'll have your whole set-up for $72.48 (plus shipping).

No, I don't work for Amazon ... or have any vested interest in them. I'm merely in a Visor-related shopping frenzy right now -- so I've been keeping my eyes open for good deals. Anyway, if anyone is interested in this deal, feel free to email me and I'll try to find a coupon for you.

Cheers!
