You'd have to realise that when Windows 3 came out it runs *ON* DOS - so that one wasn't revolutionary too.

It's just sort of like running Launcher III or Silverscreen over the original Palm OS launcher.

I tried the "simulator" for OS 5... it looks exactly like OS 4 and I can't really tell the difference except for some nicer icons. (And the fact that it runs on ARM processors. I'm interested to see how battery life will suffer from the extra power of the processor as a result.

but true the original windows programs were shells running on the OS--

But--

Most improved programs on the IBM clone PC need Windows to run. ANd to run newer versions of Windows that the newer programs need to run you need faster processors, more memory and better video capability. I think this will be the case with OS5 -- Though, of course, not right away. I remember how often I used the DOS window in 3.1/3.5/98 and ME and I almost never do so anymore. It's not even an option on XP--. I think we're moving past the capabilities of the current PDA(s). Not today or next year -- but eventually. (I suppose that's obvious) Let's hope the improvements give us more true usability and not just a pretty screen and games.

It'll depend on how well the OS5 devices sell. If they rapidly start to equal the number of OS4 or earlier devices, then yeah, I could see that, but other than gaming or multimedia, what can you think of that wouldn't be a better seller writing to both?

huh? If you mean you can't _boot_ into DOS mode, you're mostly correct (there's still a command-line safe mode in XP, though), but one can definitely still access a command line from within XP.

I don't have personal experience with XP -- I've kinda been avoiding it--

But my understanding was that it would not have the DOS command line capability-- I'm thrilled to hear they changed their mind -- That was actually one of the reasons I was avoiding XP.

Well, product activation was my main beef with it and interface was an issue as well, but given the UXTheme patch available, I've got an interface I like better now. Some reporter probably heard that there would be no option to boot to a command line and thought that meant the command line was gone. It's functionally got the same cmd.exe as NT and 2K, though.

3.5.2H3.0 probably for detecting the memory to 16mb. That's what I have on my Pro. Perhaps some minor bug fixes.

What do i know anyway..

WIN98 is an OS -- or DOS -- as opposed to a program running under a different OS. So yea, I guess any OS has to run on it's own base---
