The Big Switch!
Please understand before you read this, it is my opinion and my view of what I experienced. (Also I just got back from partying, and had a few to drink) I hope this will help all those people that constantly ask "should I keep my Visor Edge?"
I left my Handspring Visor Edge for a Palm M505. It was hard choice, I could have just got a replacement for my defective Edge. Instead I bought my new M505 which I have had for three days now.
So I hear the rumors about the dim screen. Well I guess I am one of the lucky ones to own one with a bright screen. I think if you turn the backlight off on both the M505 and the Clie. The palm is brighter with it off. I also think my M505 is too bright when I am reading ebooks at night. Plus the lighted Grafffitti area rocks! Now with the color screen out of the way, now the difference between my sexy Edge & the colorful Palm.
The first thing I can say is I miss the speed of my Handspring. I never had to overclock my edge, yet now I have to deal with the bugginess of overclocking my palm. Butt I can also underclock to save battery life. Another speed problem, Is I do miss the fact that HS has superfast hotsync's. That's one thing that I miss and won't get used to.
Ah, the memory expansion. It is great not using the springboard sled. Yet like I have always said, handspring made expansion easy. They made it for dummies like me. I have spent the past three days figuring out my SD card and what goes where. Its not like FileMover with flash; its more complicated. I am using McFile and MSmount to get every thing to work, ugh! I still cant get NoahLite to work, or CSpotRun dang-it. (For now I will use peanutpress's PalmReader) I do miss the simplicity of flash module. The plus is I do love the size of the SD/MMC. One thing I never thought about butt is logical, color apps take up more memory. Thank you JackFlash for the extra memory
I feel I was spoiled with DateBook+. I now use ActionName5, which is awesome with my new color screen, butt takes up 382k of memory and just isnt as simple to use. DBK+ was perfect for me and I used it like a pro, plus I didn't take up my ram. I don't know if its me, but I do think the Edge's screen was scratch proof. Ex: I have the Edge stylus pen, one day I wrote on the screen with the pen part, no scratches. Yet I did it at least 10 times, and still no scratches. When I first used my M505 I used my stylus pen. The screen felt different, and most of all, not scratch proof. (I am glad I picked up some WrightWrites). Oh do I hate using screen protectors. They Suck!!
I am accustom to the default launcher for the PalmOS. The default launcher doesn't recognize the apps on the SD card, it puts it into a separate category named card (or whatever you name your card). So if you put Zap2000 on your SD card it wont be in the category Games, butt in the Card category. Plus it wont be in the All category either. So now I have to use a 3rd party launcher. I am using MegaLauncerVIP, because it works seamless with FastCpu. One good thing about the 3rd party launcher is it shows of the M505's color.
Well let me wrap this up. All-in-all I am beyond happy with my decision (and that's what its all about). Its kind of funny, one of the reasons I left my fine ass Edge was memory. Now I need more apps that eat memory to do the same things I did on the edge.
If you have a Visor Edge and are happy with it, KEEP IT! Yes we all know it was deemed a mistake by HS and it hasn't been getting a lot of support from 3rd party, butt if your happy don't second guess yourself cause what you read on message boards.
As for me it looks like Handspring lost a customer, butt still has me as a fan. I know it seems like I am biased towards the Edge, its just I am so accustom to visor's. It will take me awhile to wean me off the old visor, butt soon I will be a M505 Pro
Happy New Year, and happy palm'n.
If i didnt answer something on your mind ask.

Well another reason for the M505 is I don't have to buy all Sony products from now on. MemoryStick is awesome but only Sony uses it. (did you say Microsoft?) Now I have the choice of different brands to use with my SD/MMC cards
Now that there are 3 new brands of memory stick, like SanDisk, Lexar and others more hardware manufactures are starting to support MS. Not to mention that the price is getting cheaper and cheaper. As you know M505 cards are very expensive.
About the screen, I was told and I have seen in stores that it is way better than the M505. It is brighter and more clear.
I was also told that the Sony PalmOS 4.1 has some bugs fixed that were introduced in 4.0, which I guess Palm continue to use(not sure on this one).
However, I was told that M505 SD cards are faster than MS. Which is really a PLUS.
If you want to overclock your system, I heard that Afterburner is more stable than FastCPU. I've only used Afterburner in my Prism and it works great at 45Mhz.
Again this is my personal opinion.

Was the prism not considered?
I had a really tough time deciding between my new neo and the prism when I was at the store.
Or was it a size thing with the prism as well?
Culo77, maybe you should change your signiture now that you have a color PDA.
It doesn't matter what third-party makes MemorySticks; it does, however, matter whether or not other manafacturer's can implement the technology, which is unlikely. If all you owned was Sony products than by all means knock yourself out with MemorySticks. But if you don't, you may as well stick with a product that uses storage technology that is available to all other manafacturers.
By the by, this was NOT an endorsement for Palm or Sony!
From the title of your thread I thought someone had made a trip to Trinidad, Colorado.
You mentioned missing Datebook+. Did you try Datebk3 before going to ActionNames? Datebook+ is a "light" version of Datebk3, so you should feel pretty comfortable with it.
Rolando
Zaurus?
Culo, you mentioned that you got to play with a Sharp Zaurus. Are you talking about a 5500? If so, how did you get your hands on one? I thought that they weren't out yet.

But Datebk4 probably would be as complex as ActionNames.__________________

I forgot about color. I don't think Datebk3 does it.
I use Datebk4 on my Sony 610c and love it. Colors, Icons, and different font sizes based on category or individual items. In the 4.1 version in beta, the icons can be multicolored and you can have 104 active to choose from. You can also assign presaved custom views to hardware buttons and more.
You can setup datebk4 to be as simple as Datebook+, if you like, and move on from there.
I tried Action Names and preferred the look and feel of Datebk4. Plus, Datebk4's support is truly awesome!

I ruled out the 760 cause I really don't need a MP3 player. That would just distract my from my school work, and I use my PDA mainly for all my college classes. The 760 with all its multimedia, would end up being a toy. I only keep two games on my old edge so I wont be tempted when I am studying and in class.

Slow USB Sync
Culo, You mention in your first post that the USB sync on the M505 was slower than on the Visor. I thought the univeral connector was true USB and synced at the same speed??? How much slower is it? As slow as Serial or somewhere in between?
Have you tried creating a new hotsync connection and manually bumping the speed up to 230,400 like many people do with their Visors?
If you think that the backlight on the M505 is too "bright" to read Ebooks at night, be thankful you do not have a Prism. That is a veritable flashlight at night, even at the lowest brightness!
Also, go to www.memplug.com and try PiDirect for the M505. It will allow you to run applications seamlessly off of your memory card. No more limitations of VFS, and several times faster. Trust me, you won't regret PiDirect.
