Memplug SD/MMC announced

The new model also includes a vibrating alarm.

Now this is the memory module I have been waiting for. If it can handle the SDIO for add-in SD based accessories, even better. Even if it doesn't, it will still give the Visor access to a lot more SD installed applications. I can't wait until it is released.

The big question though is will the Memplug SD/MMC support SD hardware devices - VisorCentral has asked that and this article will be updated accordingly.
This may have been a question that Memplug could not have truly answered until now, seeing that SD Association only just recently (yesterday) announced the approved specification for SDIO (as reported by Palm Infocenter).

Pricing and availability are unknown right now, but we can expect that the Memplug SD/MMC will be priced similarly to the Memplug SM or CF. (~$50)
I was just looking at the power requirements of the different Memplug springboards and I noticed something. The Memory Stick version and the SD/MMC version both have the same power requirements. Therefore it is quite likely that they used a similar micro-controller design in the new SD/MMC version. If this is the case, then I expect the price to be $69.95 as the Memory Stick version.

Actually the increased price for the MS version has nothing to do with the micor-controller design. It all has to do with the increased licensing fees that PIT has to pay to Sony to produce the module.

I just recieved an e-mail from Palm saying they now have WLAN SD cards available...is it coincidence that on the same day that SDIO was approved Memplug SD was released and Palm released its WLAN card? Or will Memplug be able to use the cards? I think this is the MemPlug I'll get...

I do not know about licensing fees that PIT may be paying Sony. However, I was basing my statement about the micro controller from this message from PiDeveloper.

Opps, just reread that message. PiDeveloper mentioned licensing fees also. So it appears the higher cost is due to both more production costs and the licensing fees.

Has anyone received a MemPlug MS module?

As an aside to this thread, since a few posts mentioned the
MemPlug MS module, has anyone received their module
yet, or have any new information as to its release?

I have been checking on availability ever since it was
annouced, and the mid-Nov date slid to mid-Dec, but
still no MemPlug MS as far as I can tell.

I sent a message to PIT, and the response was that
I would definitely see availability prior to Christmas.

I just purchased a Sony DSC-S85 digital camera, and
we already own a Sony TRV10 miniDV, so we're heavily
leveraged in MS technology, already. This module
seems perfect for us, since we have two VDx between
us.

Anyone hear any news?

Thanks,
Jerry

Power

I'm happy to see that the SD module uses much less amperage than the compact flash module. I do wish, however, that it was as low as the SM module. The SD/MMC format is still new to me. I have one question. What is the difference between a SD card and a MMC card? Is it something along the lines of the differences between the Memory Stick and the Magic Gate Memory Stick?
