Good review! I've had my Geode for a couple of weeks, and you summed up the good and bad well.

I hope you do a comparison piece between the Geode and the Megellan - perhaps after the software update from Geodiscovery later this month or next. It's too late for me (I didn't even realize the Magellan was out there), but other Visorholics might appreciate a side by side comparison.

I agree wholeheartedly on both points. The review is very good and appreciated. A one-on-one comparison would be killer, though.

Talking Re: One on One Comparison

I've got both the Magellan and the Geode and I'd love to see a comparison. Of course, it will look like a Mike Tyson vs. Pee Wee Herman cage match.

I really want to see a comparison between two stock retail units as they work today (no GeoDiscovery "My dog ate my NMEA compliance, and MMC support" excuses) and I want to see the following points covered:

1. A complete list of existing third party software support.
2. A chart of map coverage, including third party sources such as Rand Mc Nally, and DeLorme. A comparison of map accuracy would be desirable as well.
3. Is there a single presently available NMEA compliant software package that will recognize the "NMEA compliant" module.
4. A comprehensive break down on presently supported features such as bearings, headings, waypoints, paths, GPS logs etc...
5. A comprehensive listing of "features" which are not presently supported, such as MMC slots and NMEA compliance?
6. Can you turn the visor off when the module is installed?
7. Can you fit the module in a belt clip case or any case for that matter?
8. If the unit has a compass, a comparison between that compass and a $15 magnetic compass might be instructive.
9.Short of limited coverage maps, does the unit compare favorably with a $100 eTrex operating alone?

I still don't have a GPS Companion yet from Magellan, but once I have reviewed it, there will be a Faceoff article on the three GPS modules.

Ummm...if you've got them both, why don't you write one? You could include all of the items that you mentioned. In case you haven't noticed, James and Marcus don't write all the reviews.

It would be also interesting to revisit monopole's proposed review six months from now.. See who the winner is then as well.. I love my GEODE, but I feel the software isn't yet up to snuff as well as the planned GEODISCOVERY.COM integration (GEO WEB?). A few months from now I think the Magellan vs Geode story will be significantly different than it is today. I think a direct point for point comparison is a bit pre-mature at this time.

Wink Did everyone else notice?

James, first of all, great review.

Hmmm...that cover that you have on you Visor...looks like the drawings from Tactilis. Pre-production proto-type?

The cover in the photo is the cover that is bundled with the Geode.
