-- No Wireless In Canada? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9110)
In a discussion on City Guides, Yardie mentioned "no wireless" in Canada. I'm not sure I know what that means.
Does this mean I should stop drooling over the Visor Phone module 'cause it won't work up here yet?
Say it ain't so (sniff!)
Sad to say
No wireless service in Canada for the Visor....for now.
ya, but
my understanding is that, yeah, we won't be able to use omnisky or minstrel, et al, but the visor phone module should work just over the digital cell phone channels (GSM or CDMA, whichever is around) that already exist here, sort of like a wireless dial-up. i'm from alberta and i sure hope it works that way! am i on the money james, based on your understanding?
Well I don't claim to know everything about cell phones, but if Canada uses the same cell system (GSM, 1900 MHz), it should work(TM).

Of course, the phone would cost an arm and a leg if not bundled with a service provider.

According to Handspring it will cost $299 minus $20 rebate if you bought the Visor directly from them.

That is $299 with service. It will be significantly more expensive if you buy it without signing up with of their service providers.

That price is absolutely insane (without service plan) and is the reason i will not be going with it.
However, prior to finding out the price without service plan, i emailed Fido (a canadian wireless company) who wrote me back this:
"Actually, the VisorPhone being a GSM 1900 MHz handset, will work on our network.
All optional services available such as data services and PCS email can be supported through our data service, and other customized options.
Our marketing department will release information about new services or handsets at the very last minute for strategic reasons. Therefore, we can not answer your question as per working a deal with handspring."
if you want to visit fido's web site, it's at http://www.fido.ca/
hope this is of help.

works with fido eh? that's good to know. i may be moving back home in the next year or so and i was wondering how i was going to continue my wireless connection (although now i'm through palm.net, i'll switch when i get up there...unless palm expands into canada).

Let us know what GoAmerica Sales department say. I want wireless damn it..I am willing to pay!
The VisorPhone is a standard 1900 MHz GSM phone and should work fine with Microcell Connexions and its various provider permutations including fido, cityphone, and SiMPRO.
However, the thing will cost CAD$750. One solution may be simply to buy a Nokia 8890, which is a much nicer phone in some ways including the fact the thing is so tiny. This phone should be able to communicate via infrared with the Visor Prism and Platinum directly, and with the other Visors with extra Ir software installed. Furthermore this phone has both GSM 1900 and GSM 900 support, so it can be used overseas. Unfortunately, this thing costs even more, at $850.
Go America
go to the investor relations and listen to the Q3 report they talk about the module being in stock to ship soon with goweb and also to be sold in staples nationwide. try emailing [email protected] she seems to be ontop of the customer service dept. when i find out any more news i will post it here.
