with voicestream:
go to options, preferences. in the first field, enter +12063130004 (it may already be there. If there is a number already there, just leave it)
for SMS email number, enter 500 (I'm guessing this is it for ya)

then it should work fine.

If you've got cingulair, its the same procedure, but different numbers--which I don't know offhand.

I think you put the email address in the body of the SMS

There is a great little article on this here in HS support site: http://support.handspring.com/esupp...&ResType=il

The parent article is: How is the Handspring SMS application integrated with email? http://support.handspring.com/esupp...esType=RESEARCH

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, their fault.

...but I would consider posting a thread titled "Cinglair SMS problem: HELP!", to get some cingulair using folk to help you out...

Email via SMS - troubleshooting

The SMS to Internet gateway is probably down in your area - sounds like a Cingular problem.

You could also try sending an email to your phone number - use the format:

1xxx-xxxxxxx@pacbellpcsnet

If this arrives, then you can tell Cingular that it is the outbound which is not working.

This is the usual format for Cingular GSM phones with SMS email services.

Also RU sure that you subscribed to a plan that supports SMS email? - I think this is called Wireless Internet.

You don't need to enter the email center number anywhere but in the preferences. Just put the email address in the "To:" line and a message in the message area. the SMS app recognizes that you're sending to an email address and automatically routes it to your SMS mail center number.

Doh! Well, perhaps this is beyond my ken. There is no earthly reason why it shouldn't work... the "illegal characters" thing sounds like the SMS app and not cingulair, but for the life of me I can't seem to replicate the error (despite sending SMS messages to addresses that have no possible existence due to odd characters). I hate to say it, but my next piece of advice is to try a hard reset and see if that fixes anything..

Treo SMS foils Voicestream nicknames

Does anyone know of a way around this problem?

The Voicestream web site has a feature where subscribers can store nicknames for commonly used phone numbers or email addresses. For example, you could equate "Bob" to the address "[email protected]", so from your cell phone you would just create an SMS message like "Bob Who's going to win the big game this weekend?". When you send this message, the Voicestream server figures out who Bob is based on the senders phone number, and forwards it to the correct email address. This reduces the character count, plus saving you the trouble of storing long email addresses in your cell phone.

But on the Treo, entering "Bob" as an address results in an error message saying that it is not a valid address. So, your only option is to save Bob's email address in the contacts list (not a big problem) and put up with the extra characters in your SMS message (bigger problem).

Of course, if the long email address puts you over the SMS character limit, Treo will generate a second message and send them both to Bob. But this results in a confusing bunch of emails being received at Bob's end.

Why can't Treo just accept the address as I enter it?

An idea which might help...

Only phones programmed for the special feature your mentioned will work - there is a ROM app in some VS phones which intercepts the SMS and sends it to a special address which decodes the address in the header.

I suspect that Treo would work fine with this feature if VoiceStream would reveal the true address to which they are sending the SMS - i.e. I suspect that the Email center number is different for this type of SMS. Now the question is will their customer service reveal the number (if I am correct?)?
