Well, here I am posting this on my Visor again...I successfully configured my NetZero POP3 Account and was able to send mail to my AOL account and recieve email from my AOL account on it. I set it up with little hassle, and messages downloaded quickly and with ease. The program is included with the modem for those who didn't read my previous posting on the modem...btw, with AvantGo, it has cookies enabled, so when I signed on to the discussion boards, I didn't have to enter my Password and Username...It automatically recognizes me. Now I hope Juno will continue to stay the way it is so I can connect to the net with it...And I hope even more that AOL creates a AOL Full for Palm with IMs, Email, and Web Browsing, maybe even message boards and favorite places, all in one..I don't care if it would take up a Meg or even 1.5MB as long as it would work...Well, off I go!

Can you answer one question for me? (CompUSA still hasn't found one for me in their stock room!). How big is the SpringPort module? Is it basically and "internal" module with a 2xAAA battery pack hanging off the back or is it quite a bit larger?

Hi---Okay, the Modem is very sturdly (Is that a word?) built, better built than the Handspring modem...The top of the modem comes out the top of the slot by a veeerry small amount, not even a tenth of an inch..It is compatible with a hard case in the sense that you can cover the screen when you aren't using the modem...The cover will not fit on the back due to the battery pack, which is small and hangs off the module about halfway down the Visor. Also, I want to note, if you have a SpringPort module, and when you try to log on and it freezes, that means the battery is dead...Replace them! I've already gone through the 3 that Xircom includes, plus 3 old halfused batteries. Hope that answers your question!

Okay I forgot to add this...I was able to hotsync 1.87MB worth of AvantGo websites since I lost everything on the Visor and had to reload every page, and the whole 1.87MB took less than 9minutes to download to the Visor when I connected to AvantGo server through Juno service. The modem is awesome! And MultiMail is great too!

Cool Springport

"btw, with AvantGo, it has cookies enabled, so when I signed on to the discussion boards, I didn't have to enter my Password and Username...It automatically recognizes me. "
==========================

I just got my Springport today. Came in a VERY large box. It took me about 5 minutes to setup to send and receive my mail from mindspring. And will avantgo I was surfing the web. I only have one question for now. How do you turn cookies on in avantgo? When I went to this board I could see the messages no prob but when I wanted to reply via my visor it asked for my avantgo username/password and then it did not work? I'm sure it's me....

Did I say.. THIS MODEM WORKS GREAT !!!

Evan

I've got a small problem I'm hoping someone can help me with - using the version of MultiMail that comes with the Springport. I posted this on another related thread, but I thought I'd cover my bases by putting it here as well. Appologies to those who have to read it twice.

I've got MultiMail and the modem to the point where they receive/download emails from my two pop accounts (separate freemail "my yahoo") account on a very reliable basis. However, when I try and SEND a message I run into a brick wall - I get the following error message:

"Unable to resolve name. Check your DNS settings or enter the ip address of your mail server."

I checked, and I'm pretty sure I have the STMP server name entered correctly. Any thoughts out there?

Hi,

Not sure if you check this out but this is from the www site.
http://www.actualsoft.com
==================================

Q: I am getting an error saying "unable to Resolve Name" when I try to send and/or receive email. How do I fix this?

A: This error indicates that the name you provided cannot be converted to a numeric IP address that may be used for an internet connection. MultiMail (and other internet software) use something called a domain name service to convert the entry to a number. This is not unlike looking up a person's phone number in the phone book.

If you entered your mail server in the form of 'mail.server.com', check to be sure you haven't mispelled the mail server name. It can be helpful to tap on the menu/keyboard to better see the entire mail server entry.

If you are sure you have entered the name of the mail server correctly, tap on the applications button and select the preferences application. Now tap on the upper right corner of the screen and select network. Now tap details. Here you will find the configuration settings for your DNS (Domain Name Service). These settings are using by MultiMail and other internet software to convert the name you provide with an numeric IP address. You may need to consult your ISP or network administrator to obtain the proper values for these settings.

As a final note, if you have access to a desktop computer on the internet, you may obtain the IP address of your mail server by typing 'ping ' at a command line prompt. An IP address, in the form of 100.100.100.100 will be returned. You can enter this IP address directly into MultiMail, and thereby ignore configuring your DNS settings.

Hello again,

Did I say I love this modem. Been using it like crazy and very little bat. drain. I am sending this post via the SpringPort modem and using my very durible GoType keyboard. The new thing since my last post is I just loaded Eudora Web. the pro's & Con's this over AvantGo.

Pros:
-Faster
-Stored my username and password.
-FREE if you load the Beta Version
-Very easy to use. Also good bookmarks.
-Only need to scroll up/down not side to side.

CONS:
No Graphics. Or maybe I can't find how to turn them on.
thats all for now. I will update if need be.

Bye,

Evan

Evan:

After I posted, I checked out AcutalSoft's website (probably should have done that first), and was able to fix that problem. I then got a new error message that I think was a problem with the account itself. If I can't fix it tonight (I ran out of time last night), I'll post something else. Thanks.

Question FAX Feature

Just got my springport modem yesterday. Everything is working great! Really easy to setup.

I wanted to try the fax capability but don't see that option in the bundled software. I figured I could track down software for faxing but am not having much luck. Most of the search results are for the Palm VII. Mobile Win Fax is "no longer supported" by Symantec. One web site had a demo that I downloaded but their software requires Class 2 fax and the Xircom modem is only Class 1, according to their literature.

Has anyone successfully used the fax with the Xircom modem? What software?

I've got the same question. I posted a similar inquiry in a separate thread some time ago, never got an answer.

Posted by VTL on 09-25-2000 07:35 PM:

There's like three threads on this unit, so I'll post my question in each.

I'm hoping someone can help me with a couple of problems with my Springport. I've had it for about a week. It's great for downloading my POP email (a "my yahoo" freemail account), and for web browsing (given the screen limitations). However, I'm having two recurring problems:

First, I can't seem to send messages. I get the following error message:

521 - yahoo.com closing transmission channel. You must be POP - authenticated before you can use this STMP server & you must use your yahoo mail address for the send/fror field.

I then have to do a soft reset to get the thing working. Any thoughts?

Second, the modem seems to be freezing up the whole thing on an intermitent basis (unrelated to the problem above). I get an error dialog box, but it's blank - no text. Again, I have to do a soft reset.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, with the blank box on the Springport, that's a result of low batteries...Replace the batteries, and you shouldn't recieve an error message. I went through 6 half-used batteries, and am now on the first fresh pair...Can't wait for a rechargable battery, and now I can't wait for the VisorPhone!!

Posted by VTL on 09-25-2000 10:21 PM:

Thanks Nikhil! That's what I suspected.

Speaking of rechargeable batteries - does anyone know if you can use Motorola Startac batteries in the SpringPort? I assume so - it's obviously the exact same size as the modem's battery pack. However, I couldn't find anything to that effect in the documentation (such as it was) or on Xircom's website, and I'm afraid to plug one in without some type of confirmation.

Closing thread...

Since there are multiple threads about the SpringPort, this one is being closed.

Please post any future messages about the SpringPort in the Xircom Springport 56 Modem thread.
