-- New Handspring models to be announced soon (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=17506)

If HS has released the info, they have to be pretty close to releasing. They're notoriously good and keeping mum - thank God.

Well, so far we have the same data over and over again, but now we have some new data, dates & prices. Frankly, I've never seen HS release this kind of stuff before, it's not their SOP. I've seen them drop prices and watched retailers scurry to update, not the other way around... why would they hurt current sales by send a fax to staples, which almost guarantees it'll get leaked?

Not to mention the 45 mhz. Does the Dragonball even come in that? It was just June 12 when they announced their 66 mhz chip, and two weeks later we got the fated Visor Snap rumor, which was supposed to run it. I don't recall 45 mhz, but could be wrong.

...then again, what does anybody have to gain by making this stuff up, besides watching us scurry about...

whats the difference (besides a probably new os and a faster chip, which would make it like a VPL)?

Right, but they're all registered to HS, the other two are not.

I was refering to the whole Visor Snap/Twist rumor. One of the pieces of evidence some people used was that www.visortwist.com and www.visorsnap.com were registered to handspring.

I know, I was just saying that HS hasn't done that with these "models," so this rumor may be even more poorly substantiated than the Snap one.

We should find out by 8/19. Davidh gave us no timeframe for the release of these models but if they don't release them by 8/19 we should get confirmation on the sources if the price drops for Platinum and Edge.

Maybe Ace and Columbia are simply code names for the new snap and twist models?

That is a good idea, they sound like code names... more than snap and twist sound like product names!

Well after reading all this speculation (only God knows why we humans indulge in this so much...) I have to add my 2 cents.

Why would HS even mention "code names" to Staples or anybody outside the biz? Usually code names are for beta testers, in-house users, and something to call it until it has an official name. If they plan to call it Snap and/or Twist, that means it no longer needs a code name. Example: Windows XP was called Whistler until they officially named it Windows XP. If HS plans to use Snap and Twist, they would have used that name in the Staples fax as Staples could care less about code names. Staples has to market under the final name. Besides, don't you think this would be confusing to those "bright" Staple's managers...giving the code name in the fax then sending them the actual product with a different name...? Just a little food for thought.

P.S. - I'm not flaming the intellectual properties of ALL Staple's managers, just the few I've ran across. These "managers" I refer to use their head merely as a hat rack. If you are a Staple's manager, please don't take offense because I'm probably not talking about you.

Which is why I tend to doubt this whole thing altogether, why would HS announce to individual staples stores at all?

I totally belive this:

my reasons:

Handspring likes it that when they announce their products, within a DAY, they are avaible in Retail (from what I've seen) What this means to me is that, handspring contacted their retailers, saying they got new products, be prepared to advertise them for use etc.. Staples and other retailers than tell each individual store about the new stuff, so the stores can be ready when they get this new box. They iwll know not to put it on shelves untill Monday, or whatever day they will announce it.

Due to the way handspring does stuff, a release is IMMINANT. like EARLY next week, or maybe a week lator, assuming all this is TRUE.

to get to 45 Mhz, they probably are using the same ship, just they have it overclocked.

Come on..? You really believe HS would overclock a chip?

I agree with you on the rest of your summation but this I don't believe. Overclocking anything opens the door for mass trouble.

Posted by miradu on 08-09-2001 09:02 PM:

not really. .let me explain why.

Becuase HS can do it at the hardware level, they can change voltages and stuff like that - stuf that most users cant do. Software overclocking works fine, and for me IS VERY STABLE at 42 Mhz. I've never had a problem with that. It's cheap, and it gives them an edge above other companies.

I guess to me it makes sence.. .oh well - also WOW notice how fast this thread has exploded!

ooo. I can't wait!

Unless these new models have something that is a radical improvement over the others, I really don't think they're worth upgrading to. The rumored 16mb and 45mhz is not a HUGE improvement. Especially since we can expect ARM based units next summer and VFS now available my Prism always has at least 2MB free and uses about 25MB on it's CF card.

The "Columbia" would make a great Platinum replacement if it had a titanium case .

I know it's a little off topic but I want to say that my Prism is VERY UNSTABLE at 42 MHz. I have had numerous soft and HARD resets running AfterBurner 3.0z and have had the same result with FastCPU 2.5. I was a long-time advocate of overclocking but will not do it any more...

Even overclocking at the hardware level would cause problems. Changing clock-multipliers and bus speeds on PC's causes the CPU to get very hot, this is true for the Dragonball processors in Visors. In order to keep an overclocked chip running smoothly it must have a fan to keep it cool. A fan would suck batteries dry.

That's speculation running wild! the news and media has turned all of us into "speculation hounds". How many times do we watch a high-speed chase on the news and listen to the news anchor speculate as to the reason why he/she is fleeing the police? or a bank robbery? or some other mayhem? We sit here day in and day out listening to people speculate about why, how, when, where, what, could they, should they, did they, would they, maybe they did, maybe they didn't...... and it seeps in from every direction you look, TV media, newspapers, radio, internet, discussion boards.

Oh well, I just wanted to rant a bit.
