flash module vs memory upgrade

I'd like to boost my Prism to 16mb and am interested in some comments. Which is the better way to go: purchase a springboard flash module that boosts the memory another 8mb or go with a memory upgrade (like stnecorp does for 99 usd). If I go the flash module route, I'm assuming that I can load and run programs directly from the flash module, right? (Or do I have to copy the files from the flash module to the Prism?) Suggestions and thoughts appreciated.

Hey,

I use the innopak/2v and until recently I was using the 8mb flash module. You can loud and run programs from the module itself but some programs crash the visor when you do so. What I do is move them onto the module and run it from the module. If all goes well then you are good to go. The problem that I find with these modules is that you have to hotsync the program to the visor first and then move it to the flash module. You are not supposed to move databases to the card but I find that read only databases (those that are not written over by any program) work extremely well on any additional memory. Memplug http://www.pitech.com/hardware/Memplug.htm has modules that you CF, SD, MS, among others. There are optional programs that you can use to loud the cards with programs directly from your computer.
The advantage of getting an internal memory upgrade is that the visor sees the memory as physical memory and expansion memory. So when you insert an 8mb card into the visor the physical memory is 8mb and the flash memory is 8mb. With the memory upgrade the physical memory is 16mb. Also it keeps your expansion slot free for other modules. I use an innopak/2v and I only keep games in it. I only swap out occasionally to take pictures with my eyemodule2.
The disadvantage of getting an internal memory upgrade is that it voids the warranty and the unit is not upgraded instantly you have to wait up to two weeks for the upgrade to be complete. Using the expansion memory is instantaneous and with the addition of cf, sd or ms memory the memory can be increased up to 256 mb! Just my 2 cents. Sorry for making this so long.

Actually, memory using expansion cards is unlimited. You can use as many cards as you want by arranging them according to application if you have large amounts of data.

Then you swap them out according to what you are using.

Even better is to have multiple memory springboards so that you don't have to swap the individual cards. This of course adds to the cost.

I've used this technique on a limited basis with some 4meg CF cards from my first digital camera. Found that swapping the CF cards in the module can be tedious if you have to do it a lot.
I just stored some needed maps on one, and some other large documents on the other. The maps were used infrequently, so the swapping wasn't a big problem.

Get Both

I have both the internal ememory upgrade and a CF memplug.

The internal upgrade from STNE DOESN'T void the warrenty. If you ask Handspring about upgrades they will send you to STNE to get it done. Also it doesn't take weeks to get done. I had my wife's palmV upgraded to 8Mb before my visor (to test STNE of course). Both the PalmV and Prism upgrades were done the same week(sent Monday, arrived Thursday). This memory is NO different than the original 8Mb found in your Visor. You can run anything from it and it has no significant power drain on your battery.

I also have the CF memplug with four memory cards(512Mb, 2X 256Mb Ultra, and 128Mb). I chose the CF version because it is what my digital camera uses, and it has the largest sizes available, currently up to 1Gb cards. I keep hundreds of documents, mapopolis maps, web sites, databases, and games on the cards. I can run them through a VFS enabled app, PiDirect II, or by using Launcher3 to copy them to internal memory and running them there(it removes them when you finish running the app). The down side of CF is the power drain from your battery. Don't put apps that you use regularly on the CF card. For more on how to use a memplug check out launchplug.com.

In short if you need more than 16Mb, get a memplug or wait for a PalmOS 5 unit. Other wise, get the STNE upgrade, and then get a memplug later.

thx everyone! Well I decided to go the memplug route...and am absolutely thrilled. My local staples is offloading springboard modules, and they sold me a memplug sm for 25 bucks so I couldn't resist. (and an eyemodule (v1) for 20 ) I also purchased PiDirect II for memplug, and am absolutely amazed that I can run programs directly from the memplug module. That's what I wanted! I've already filled my 32 card with 16 megs of stuff, so I'm just pleased as a pig in.....well, you know.

Everyone's comments were much appreciated. Thanks so much for taking the time.

Hey,

I bought the eyemodule II for $199 and now it can be found for $99. It happens to everyone. Items have hype in the beginning and then go sour.

Eyemodule I still goes for about $120 here and II goes for $220.
