Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

Question I'm close, but no cigar YET!

External Modem Help Needed!

Please help! I am SO close to being able to surf with my Visor via an external modem!

Below you will find a complete listing of the gear I am using and the settings I have made to the Visor.

Here's the problem step by step.
1. I go to Avantgo on my Visor.
2. I go to the file folder icon which allows me to input a URL.
3. I input visorcentral.com (the http:\\www. is already there.
4 I click "OK"
4. the modem dials (I see "dialing TCTC.com on the screen.
6. I see "Signing on" (on Visor)
7. I see "established" (on Visor)
8. I see "Fatal Exception" and a reset button. (on Visor)
Obviously Step 8 is the frustration.

My setup consists of the following:
Visor Deluxe
Compaq/Microcom Deskporte 28.8P 33,600 bps V.34 Data/ Fax External Modem
Handspring Serial (hotsync) cradle (These are female on the end)
9 pin to 25 pin Null Modem cable (This is female on the serial end as well)
a small connector I picked up at Radio Shack to connect the two female serial ends.(serial cradle to Null Modem cable)
AvantGo (browser)

PalmOS Preferences settings are:
Network:
Service: tctc.com (this is my local ISP
User Name: rrreed
Password: -Assigned-
Phone: (my dial up)
Details:
Connection Type: PPP
Idle timeout: Power Off
Query DNS: -Not Checked-
Primary DNS: 205.243.39.34 (this is the same as I must use for my local ISP service)
Secondary DNS: 205.243.39.39 (this is the same as I must use for my local ISP service)
IP Address: Automatic

Under "Modem" in the Preferences screen:

Modem: Custom
Speed: 57,600 bps
Speaker: Low
Flow Ctr: Off (this may be my problem. I cannot figure out how to shut the flow control off on my modem. The manual states that I must use the following command line "AT\G0\Q0" without quotes. The problem is that I don't know where to put this info.)
Country: Other
String: AT&F1&C1&K0%C3

Again, I have borrowed these settings from other posts in this thread. Please help me resolve this issue as I am SO close to being able to surf with my Visor!

This probably isn't really required but you can try adding \G0\q0 to the end of the modem string in the modem settings.

String: AT&F1&C1&K0%C3\G0\Q0

Also, try establishing the connection before starting AvantGo. Go to the Network panel in Prefs and tap Connect. See if you can successfully establish a connection (no Fatal error and the little flashing bar ( | ) in the upper right corner of the screen), and then go into AvantGo.

It sounds to me like the problem might be with AvantGo since you are getting as far as "established" during dial-up.

I added the characters to the sting, but unfortunately did not see improvement.

It will connect without error from the Network Connect area.

From there I get the Fatal Error using AvanGo.

Please help.

Thanks I appreciate it.

Obviously, there's some kind of problem with AvantGo, though I'm not sure what it is. Are you getting any kind of specific error message with the Fatal Error or is the Visor just locking up?

You may want to try another browser. ProxiWeb is still available.

Question Another Reply to Mark...

Mark,

I need to learn how to quote text like you do!

The fatal error simply states "Fatal Error" with a "Reset" button as a sole choice.

Once I click Reset the Visor does a soft reset.

I'll look into the Proxyweb!

Thanks!
RR

Question

Mark,

After further review, I am not getting a flashing bar in the upper right hand corner after I connect through preferences?

Does this mean I am not truly online despite no visable errors??

Thanks.

Just click the button in the message you want to quote.

The quoted text will automatically appear in the reply box with all the required formatting codes. Edit out any unwanted or unnecessary text to keep things clean.

The lack of the flashing bar means you are not connected. Try this: after tapping Connect, press the Down button on the Visor. This will show status messages as your connection attempt is being made. You might be able to see an error message from the login process which could shed some light on what's wrong.

Thanks Mark! The down button trick is outstanding!

It turns out I was wrong. I am connecting! I do get the flashing bar. (Man that thing is tiny!!!)

So, I going to attempt Proxyweb.

Thumbs up I did it!! (thanks to the posts and Marks help!!

Proxiweb saved the day!

It works like a dandy now! I wonder what the deal is with my AvantGo and the fatal error issues?

Proxiweb seems to have some very nice features though!

Which is better, Eudoramail, or Multimail. Also, what is the URL to Multimail?

Thanks,
Ron

Question External serial modem via IR?

If I can IR sync to my desktop's serial port through an IR device connected to it, and I could (if I had one) use a serial hotsync cradle with a null modem adapter to communicate with an external modem (as evidenced in this forum)...Why couldn't I slap a null modem adapter on the end of my serial IR device and communicate with an external modem through that? I have Palm's IR updates that allow me to shunt serial communication to the IR port...seems easy to me. Is there something I'm missing?!?
I have an Extended Systems JetEye PC (ESI-57860) IR device that ends in a female 9-pin, and a VDX.

...Sorry if I'm rambling, but I did a little experiment before I sent this. I tried to dial from the Network panel on the Visor out through the IR device connected to my PC. The PC recognized IR communication was occurring, and stayed connected until the Visor declared it could not find a modem. What happens if I stick a modem on the end of that chain? Does the modem power the IR device? Does the IR device even require power? It's going to cost me a null-modem adapter and an external modem to find out, eh?

Thumbs down Can't Get VPR Serial Cradle To Work With USR 56K External Modem

I have tried to get my Visor Prism to work with an external USR 56K modem to no avail. My setup is as follows:

Serial Cradle -> Gender changer -> Modem Cable -> Null Modem Adapter -> Modem

My Connection Settings are as follows:

Connection Method: Serial to Modem
Dialing: TouchTone
Volume: Low
Speed: 9600 bps
Country: Other
Flow Ctl: Off
Init String: AT&F0&C1&H0&I0&K0

When The cradle is connected to the modem the RD and SD lights stay on. When I try connecting the RD and SD lights turn off and then flicker a few times. However, the connection is unsuccessful and the connection fails with a "Modem Not Found" error.

Does anyone know what is happening? Can anyone offer any tips?

Re: Can't Get VPR Serial Cradle To Work With USR 56K External Modem

Well, I have made some progress. I have managed to get the Prism to dial out on the modem by flipping a DIP switch on the modem to set DTR override. The two sides actually connect as well. However, I get the PPP Timeout problem after seeing the "Signing on Negotiating" message. I have made sure that Flow control is turned off on the visor and I issue &H0 to turn flow control off.

Anybody have any idea on how I can get past this one?

external modem

Is it an absurd notion to use a pcmicia modem to go online with the visor? the springbord expansion pins look like they would fit... or perhaps making a cable for it like you are all doing with the external modems?
anyone thought of this already? any ideas why it would or would not work?

Well, mine doesn't fit. I think it's the Type I, since it is almost the same size as the springboard. It is a physical limitation for me (some plastic keeps it from enterting), so it might work with an adapter or something.

More tips

I received my WAC serial cable and tried to connect into an ISP. Following all the suggestions here I was able to get in fine using a Hayes External modem.

I could not get a PPP connection using a USRobotics 33.6 Sportster however. Kept getting a PPP timeout. Well I played with the modem setting enough and finally got it to work! 10 hours later.

Here is my setup string for the USRobotics

AT&F2&C1&K1&H0&I0&M0

It seems my ISP (IBM) needed the &M0 to work. That was the last thing I tried. PPP timeouts appear to be modem setup problems as mentioned in previous posts. Don't chase wild geese.

I have not gotten Avantgo to do a modem sync yet, but the browsing works fine. Also Browse-it is working really well also. I could not get NetZero or Bluelight to work although Bluelight does give me a PPP connection and assigns DNS fine. I just can't browse!

I hope this helps.
