Question Handcam purchase?

I am considering buying a Targus Handcam for my visor deluxe. I am not planning on using it as a serious digital camera, but more just for fun, and hopefully take the occasional picture of something I want to remember, or to show others. I have read varying reviews saying it is not a serious digital camera, it should not be used for serious photography, etc, but I was wondering if it is okay just for entertainment and recreations use?

Thanks

Chris

Do a search here for Handcam. You will find two other threads where people have had varying experience with this unit, mostly bad. I am one of the ones sending it back.

If the 'entertainment and recreations' use means the things you'll be shooting are all absolutely still (or you can make them stay absolutely still), then sure, it's a pretty cool camera. I've had trouble with it, and it has disappointed me, but I can see that it's got its uses. I currently have no plans of returning it, as I believe I can adapt my usage to compensate.

Also, if you plan on getting/needing a webcam, then the HandCam is pretty cool, as it can double as that.

But if you plan on taking pictures of action shots (animals, moving people, children playing, etc etc etc), then, no, I would NOT suggest it.

If you check the "HandCam in Stock!" thread, you'll see many many posts by various individuals experiencing good and bad things with the HandCam. Most of them have had trouble installing the software, while a couple others have had issues with the camera's performance as well.

Read a bit more, and make your judgement.

Hand cam is great!

I don't have an eyemodule, but my son (age 14) got a handcam with some of his extra money ($80 at buy.com).

it's been great for him--no installation probs or anything (he did the normal, didn't try any different installs).

He takes pictures of friends, then uses the photo-editor to doctor them up. He takes a video of the dog, and friends skateboarding.

He used the webcam feature to take a picture of a map, and then colored it to improve the visuals, then put it in a powerpoint presnentation on the geography of ancient Rome.

The only drawback is that he has a Plat (and I have a 2-yr old Deluxe), so we can't see the results in color!

Hi again, Chris!

Well, I have owned a Eyemodule2 for a number of months now - and it is a lot of fun. I'm curious about the HandCam too, but some of the postings describing problems have me a bit concerned.

I actually like to use the Eyemodule2 to take mini-movies (let's just say that they're quasi-candid!) - and if you click off the 5-second limit, it will keep filming until your Visor runs out of memory. The longer the video, the longer the hotsync time. BUT, it always works. If the HandCam contains only 2 meg, then it is inferior to the Eyemodule2 ('cause you can go way more than 2 meg depending on how much free memory you have left).

If anyone knows more about the mini-movie capabilities of the HandCam, please chime in.

The Handcam contains 2 meg of memory but I think it saves to the Visor memory then you transfer to the 2 meg so its better than the Visor only.
