Pro: 16 megs ram, very reliable, large form factor, ho-hum looks, expandable w/out losing form.
Edge: 8 megs ram, very thin form, incredible looks, may not be 100% reliable, kludge expansion.

...in the end, it's up to you. If you're thinking you'll be a power user, get the Pro. If you think you'll be a regular/light user, get the edge.

Talking

I'd pick a Pro... maybe because there're fewer accessories out there for the Edge?

Whereas there's lots more for the Deluxe/Plat/Neo/Pro form factor..

And yeah, 16MB helps too.

I don't believe the LED on either unit will be a way to warn you about battery life (in fact, I think that only PalmOS Smartphones do that with a LED currently...).

Most 3rd party launchers (in addition to the standard PalmOS launcher) have a battery meter, and there are other applications, like ClockPop, that can give you battery life meters at the touch of a button. and the nice thing is that battery life on the Edge is second to none, and I image the Pro is probably just as good.

...In other words, unless you're going to be using it heavily for a week at a time with no recharge, you should be fine. And it you're not, there's always travel chargers and emergency chargers.

Well, the battery meter on the standard launcher is good enough for most. I use launcher III, here, and clockpop can be found here.

BTW: I just searched for these at www.palmgear.com and found them in under a minute, you could do the same

Another important point on the Visor Pro vs. Edge is speed. The visor Edge is much much faster.

If you decide with the Edge. lemme know. I have a used one with an extra charging cradle (it's all *excellent*condition) that I'm looking to sell for about 120 bucks. I live at the other end of the Sound from you in Bonney Lake... so we could hook up in Bellevue if you're interested ..

Lemme know!

How do you figure?

Anecdotal perceptions (less reliable) and benchmark tests (more reliable) have fairly consistently shown it to be 'true'. "Why is it slower when everything should be equal?" has been a question raised in several reviews of the Pro that I've seen.

I had not seen the benchmarks. Rather makes sense if it's addressing double the memeory, but "much much faster?" I'll have to hunt some benchmarks down.

I've beamed benchmark 2.0 to the pro and edge in the store. The pro scores 162% and the edge 244%. I also tried playing a bit with both of them and the edge was much faster playing the game bejeweled.

It's strange that even though they use the same CPU and same screen (4-bit monochrome) that there is such a big difference.

The lack of speed on the Pro is starting to really bother me. I am going to try e-mailing Handspring's customer support and ask what the deal is. I'm sure this will get nowhere, but it's worth a shot. I payed the full $300 for what I thought would be a unit equal in speed to the fastest PalmOS models out. Instead I get something that feels more like using my Deluxe than using a new model. My step-mom has the Edge and there is a very obvious speed difference.

Note the other replies in this thread *and* the other thread I started in this discussion group. I've seen Neal's Benchmark pull 406% on the Edge (with afterburner) and only 268% with the Pro (again with afterburner).

If it weren't for the fact that I need more internal memory, I'd take the pro back and stick with the Edge....

One other note. I have also found the IR output of the Pro to be FAR better than the Edge or even the Visor Deluxe. I can use Omniremote without a hitch on the pro where my stereo, VCR, etc have a hard time 'seeing' the signal from the Edge or Deluxe models.

Ok, I called Handspring's Technical Support. I got a guy that didn't really understand what I was saying, but he took my information and refferenced it to a higher level tech rep. I gave him the url of SysInfo, the program that is telling me that my Pro is clocked at 28mhz, and told him about the results using Benchmark. They are supposed to call me back with thier response. I don't know if this is going to get me anywhere, but I am still trying. I feel like this is a pretty bad case of misrepresentation on Handspring's part. When I called the Sales department they happily told me that the Pro had the 33mhz Dragonball chip, but didn't mention anything about underclocking. I will keep the board up to date on what happens.

What if this isn't underclocking - per se - but more like a case of the OS having to manage an extra 8MB of RAM?

Dragonball CPU's don't have an MMU (Memory Management Unit). That has to be done in Software. The PalmOS actually puts part of that management system into the Palm RAM itself. You can see this for yourself. Use JBBackup and backup an 8MB unit onto a CF card. Then restore that onto the pro you'll end up with a Pro that only has 8MB of RAM.

It *could* be that the additional effort of managing the 16MB of ram is slowing down the OS, and that gives the appearance of the unit being slower or 'underclocked'...

Just a thought.

If the speed issue was just a case of the OS having to deal with more RAM that wouldn't explain why SisInfo is telling me that the chip is clocked at 28Mhz.

28 Mhz vs 33 Mhz

28 Mhz vs 33 Mhz...does it really make that much of a difference? I think some folks are just too picky. If the Visor Pro is indeed "underclocked", I am sure that there is a good technical reason for doing it.
