MemPlug Update V1.6 and PiDirect Retail

Looks like Portable Innovation has released another update for MemPlug. New Version1.6 is out this morning. In addition, they have PiDirect for Sale. Cost is $9.95 until 01October2001, when it goes up to $19.95.

I have downloaded V1.6 and am about to install it. Hopefully they are really ready for PrimeTime, we will see.

Now that I have installed the Updater, one interesting note is it is now called PiUpdater and has the Portable Innovation Logo for the Icon. Cool.

Now I have ran the updater. No problems there. However, I removed the MemPlug after running the updater and went into the PalmOS Delete App. PiDirect is still there. This was one of the quirky things that caused problems with Beta4. And it looks like it might cause some problems with this one. Just got my first Fatal Error. Everything was working fine, even with MarkMyScriptures, which I had problems with last time. Then, I removed the MemPlug and deleted PiDirect from RAM. Put the MemPlug back in went to Disable PiDirect to see what would happen and got the Fatal Error. Same thing that happened last time with Beta4.

All appears well now. Anyone who has PiDirect left over after the update should delete it. However, once it is deleted, PERFORM A SOFT RESET. I just did that and everything seems great. I probably never would have seen the Fatal Alert if I had just remembered to do the soft reset. This was my fault. Portable Innovation does state to do the soft reset.

It is definately faster. Of course, anyone running Beta4 already knows that. I did not use Beta4 due to incompatibility to MarkMyScriptures.

Definately nice. Probably will pay the $9.95 before it doubles. They certainly have earned their money.

Pi Rocks!

Just did the update, and it is even faster than beta 4! I think what Pi has done is phenominal, and their willingness to listen to us early adopters and offer the price reduced for a few months demonstrates their dedication to customer service almost as much as their monitoring of message boards to assist everyone has. This company has been first class to eal with since day one, and I for one am glad that they stepped in and raised the bar for memory expansion. Chloe, Addi, Patrick, thanks again for everything!

For those who have applied the 1.6 update. Is the gmovie player 2 a full or demo version?

I really do not know. I do not use GMovie and have never used it. If I understand it correctly, GMovie is free, it is the maker that goes on the PC that they charge for.

Go to the MemPlug site, it says gMovie ver 2.0.

I agree with adfleisher, all the PiPeople are the best, most responsive Visor developers out there.

Whoops, sorry I just re-read your question. I don't know yet whether it's full or less than that, haven't installed it yet. I would imagine though that the download just contains the player which is free at gMovie anyway. You're probably more interested in the movie maker, which as I recall came on CD when you purchase the MemPlug.

yeah. I hadn't paid too much attention to the gmovie stuff. So I'm assuming that unless Pi provides a seperate download we are going to have to do the upgrade. I think I'll wait till I have a need for sound.....or I when I have kids. Me to office workers: "Look at this video of my kid from over the weekend!!!!"

...and then they'll hear it on the tiny Visor speaker and be like "Are your kids robots? It sounds like a tin can, I can't even understand what they're saying man!"

Pi doesn't even need to to post a download of Movie Maker 2, just the upgrade code.

The audio actually works much better with music or sounds. Try one of the Bloop TV cartoons, or download an avi with sound.

Have you seen any of the Incredibly Boring Film Festival gMovies? In my opinion, they are worthless, but perhaps someone will create content with some sound and written dialog frames like modern silent movie.

What I would really like to see is a new MemPlug module like the current one but with a speaker or phone jack, which could play music from a 128mb SMcard; or gMovies with sound (Sony has content coming out) and/or spoken word like Audible.com.

I believe that they looked into the possibility but decided, given the two mp3 players already out that it wasn't a good bet. It's too bad, I think the combo plus the readily available storage media of SM and/or CF would do well.

I would have bought it. Problem now is that I'm used to memory on the thinmodem plus and memplug but the xircom module needs more. Screws me up at work. How bout memplug/xircom and memplug/magellan...Or how about integrating it into the prism. I know it would be bulky but still not as big as an ipaq with the expansion sleeve......

It would be great if OS 5.0 would have a media player built in ala Windows. There are people who complain that a media player would take away from the "simplicity" of the Palm platform. Personally I think if Handspring/Palm don't build in sometype of multimedia support (e.g. Sony) in the next generation, I think that will be the nail in the coffin for the Palm platform. I can't see spending even $400-500 for the "next generation" Prism and then having to purchase a multimedia Springboard.

My $.02
