Unhappy

I too am saddened by the loss of the only wired ethernet option. I was looking forward to a speedy remote hotsync option over the internet with my Visor and such a module. Honestly though, I wonder what the market for such a device would be in terms of unit sales for a consumer-oriented (as oposed to Enterprise) device such as the Visor.

sniff, sniff

Maybe with Intel at the helm of Xircom, who knows???

And just what makes you think that the Visor is only being sold in the consumer market? There is a significant portion of the enterprise market that cares not for what Symbol is doing, and is deploying Visors on threir factory floors and in the knowledge worker's office buildings.

I have a need for 20 wired ethernet Springboards today, and if I can get buy-in, possibly 1000 of them over the next year, with up to 5000 possible.

It's hard to fight off WinCE devices that can be wired to the network with PalmOS devices that cannot. I can only hold off the Micro$oft hoard for so long I'm afraid.

jakemonO,

I just got an e-mail from Xircom regarding the ethernet module. He specifically said that it will be available 1Q 2001.

They said they cancelled it.. As much as we all didn't want

That sounds nice, rifleman. Q1 2001 is nearly 1/3 over. Do you suppose they'll actually meet that deadline, or are we talking "vaporware" still?

Just curious.

Here is the e-mail I got..

Thank you for your interest in Xircom SpringPort Modules. The Wireless Ethernet (802.11b) SpringPort module (SWE) will be available at the beginning of May.

Our SpringPort GSM connection kits for the Springport Modems support various GSM phones including Nokia, Ericsson, Siemens, and Sony. It's a great wireless solution for sending and receiving email and browsing the Web on your Visor Handheld.

The product will be available shortly (beginning of Feb) from Shop Xircom on the Xircom Web site. The SRP on the product is $129.00.

http://www.xircom.com/cda/shop/1,1885,1-840-1_155-3,00.html

The keyword there was "wireless". We're talking about the "wired" ethernet module, tho...

Any info about this module? I posted some info about an IR solution for connecting to an Ethernet network in the Accessories section.
