-- Prism + Visorphone: will it or will it not work in Europe? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12027)
I just bought a Prism, it's great! Next stop, VisorPhone.
Only one problem: I'm going to be overseas for a while in a few months, and I'd like to be able to use it while I'm there. Can I?
In case others are interested, I've been all over handspring's web site and the boards here, and I've got three different answers. One says that the VisorPhone for the Platinum and Deluxe is North America only, doesn't say anything about the Prism. Another says that the VisorPhone will only work in the US, but that a Europe-only version is in the works (which doesn't help me, I want one phone for US and Europe). Handspring's tech support said that it would actually work overseas, but the sound quality might not be as good and they don't support it technically. This didn't make any sense to me, aren't the frequency bands different and if so why would it work at all?
So I finally bit the bullet, registered on this site, and nowappeal to the GSM/Visor gurus here: based on what you know of GSM, VisorPhone, and the Prism, will a Prism+VisorPhone combination work in Europe (specifically, St. Petersburg) or not? If not, do I have hope for anything to be released before summer? (I'm familiar with http://www.blue-impact.com, any others?)
Perplexedly,

The Visorphone that is currently available will not work in Europe.
Handspring is preparing a model which will work in europe and north america.
visor phone in Europe
Sluggo's response seems correct to me. I think I read a post on the visorvillage site or even on the European i.e. British Handspring site. The frequency used in North America is 1900 MHz. In Europe they use 900 and 1800 MHz. Most European cellulars receive both frequencies. The phone Visor intends to launch would feature 900 and 1900 MHz. It should work with Prism and Plat. I am, however, not quite sure which frequencies they use in Russia. On the other hand a friend from Moscow once brought his Siemens cellular to Paris and it worked. So much as an indicator.
Be aware of roaming fares anyway if your company doesn't pay them you can easily get to several hundred dollars.
quote:Sluggo is right to say that the Visorphone currently available IN THE USA (1900 MHz.) probably will not work in Europe. Though I don't know how much truth there is in Handspring's comment about sound quality
