Question

well, I am going to take a chance and order mine next Friday ( payday !) . I have a Vdx and I LOVE IT !!

I want a prism, but after reading all the posts, I have my doubts. I will take the chance, and I hope I get one that works. I feel better, at least if I have problems, I can get it exchanged.....wish me luck :-)

Go for it, Paul. Because Handspring sends you a new unit before you return the faulty one, I'm never worried about doing without--assuming the unit's only problem is graffiti(and the shipping is on their dime). Even though I'm a little annoyed about problems I've experienced with the Prism so far, I still think it blows away anything available today. I'm far from dis-enchanted...in fact, I'll keep returning them until I get a keeper, because I am extremely impressed with the unit overall.

Replacement on the way...

FWIW... I have requested a replacement unit.

I really like the unit in all areas except the flawed Graffiti which makes it very difficult to use as an input device. I've found myself using the keyboard (use a keyboard hack) to do anything that I need to enter fast and accurately.

Support is still sending messages in response to my inital inquiries, some suggest to try to resync the digitizer with others saying they know their is a problem etc...they should read each others mail and see just how confusing they make the matter.

Hopefully, I will get a good replacement. The shipping is free and I'm not out anything while they keep trying.

hope I get lucky then....

I am pretty sure I will order mine this Friday......or should I wait until they are at my local Target????

It is a toss up for me, as of today, I will order Friday and take my chances. I am glad to hear in another thread that many have had no problems at all with their units. Glad to hear some good news...

Lightbulb

My first post since August 20th, and I'd like to change my username...

It doesn't sound like anybody's having problems with on-screen tapping, though I could be wrong. If I'm right, then it's better for me, since I just use an enhanced keyboard hack. As for the problem itself, could it be caused by a design defect? I don't know how touch-screens actually work, but I'd say it was made in such a way that sensitivity was reduced in the problem areas.

Now if only I can scramble up $700...

Cool Software Update is the Fix for Me!

Update...

I called this morning wondering where the replacement Prism was that they said they would ship out...

While waiting for them to figure out where it went, I checked the Handspring Web site to see if they had any mention of the fix...

They did... Apparently, yesterday (13th) they released a software update that fixes not only the graffiti problems but some other problems that I was unaware of.

Figuring that the tech was going to ask if I had tried it, I downloaded it, and installed it into the Prism while on hold.

He came on the line before I was done though and told me that the replacement had shipped yesterday. He didn't say anything about the software fix...

After he hung up, I got to try the fix..

IT IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY...

With the software fix, the Graffiti is back to the way it should be, screen taps are right on as well. With the software fix by itself, I'd say that my problems are now history, but it will be interesting to see what the replacement Visor Prism is configured with....

Does it include the software update, did they burn a new version of the Rom or is it just going to be a Prism without the software patch that doesn't have the apparent hardware problem....

Will see in the next day or two...

Right now, I'm real happy with the performance of the current Visor Prism... It is now a fully functional device...

software fix

I'm glad to hear that they fixed the software glitch in the graffiti identification. I'm hoping the Prism I ordered last Friday is the new and improved Prism.

By the way ... what's the point in paying for overnight delivery if it takes them 3 to 7 days to 'process' the order. I think HS should pick up the tab for overnight delivery for all Prism orders and re-orders and credit those of us who paid extra for fast shipment!! kobidoc

To get it faster than the other ppl who didn't get it express?

BTW, I ordered mine on Wednesday and Got it on Friday. Guess it wasn't backorder then.

Yes indeedy!
Yesterday I was struggling with the bitmap editor in ResEdit. Often I'd tap a space, and a few pixels an inch away would turn color. Frustrating.
I just installed the update and IT WORKS! IT WORKS! Suddenly it is just like my Visor Delux. Perfect!

Well the next day or two, ended up being the same day... the unit arrived today...

Taking it out of the box right away and testing the graffiti showed it did work much better than the unit I had started with. It still seemed a bit sluggish though, but that simply could be because I knew (I looked first) that it did not include the software fix.

I checked the versions etc.. and they were the same as a stock unit, the recently posted software update was not loaded on the machine.

Taking the Backup module backup of the old unit and loading the new unit provided almost identical machines.

The only real difference that I noticed was that the screen of the newer unit appeared to be a bit brighter than the older unit. Everything else was the same, case, screen, buttons etc...

I charged up the new unit fully and did more testing and it appears to work the same as the old unit with the patch.

I will keep the old unit for a day to make sure there isn't anything else wrong with the new unit and then ship it back.

Now... its time to look at the OmniSky Service... modem....

It didn't make sense to move onto that until I had resolved the original base unit problems first... Can't wait...
