-- Problems with Prism (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=8742)
Here are my problems, so far:
The character recognition is off a bit. It seems like
something is really wrong with it.. I have done hard
resets and "redigitized" a series of times...I hope I didn't
get a bad one.
update: It turns out you have to press HARDER than usual.
I have had a pilot, palm3, palmV, Visor Deluxe and this
is by far the hardest to write.
The stowaway works, but you have to jam it in pretty solidly. It is really stable, however, not like previously
stated.
All applications seem to work so far, except album to go,
and I think that's just an upgrade
The Color is great and it is significantly faster than
the deluxe. Totally worth it.
If I can only find dopewars in color, I'll be set.
Will keep you posted. I'm being a bit crazy, so
I am doing a restore from the backup module into the
new prism. I wonder what will happen ;-)
Also, the eyemodule will not work unless you updated, so
no eyemodule until the new drivers.
Haven't tried my serial module yet.
I really like the new pop up menu when you do a command,
which brings the trashcan, info and beam icons.
Is this because of 3.5 or new with the prism?
Ok..the restore seemed to work...will let you know of problems. So, you can "upgrade" from deluxe to prism
by doing a restore from backup module.

I'm having problems transfering my data. Seems it can't install HandyShopper's database or one of the AvantGo databases. I moved HandyShopper and it's database to my 8MB module and deleted AvantGo (I want the color version anyway). We'll see...

How does the Prism's screen compare to the IIIc? Does it look anything like:

It doesn't seem as blurried as the picture shows,
but it does have a weird '3d' effect. I have been
trying to upgrade my apps so far, and have had only
problem with simplesketch...nothing more so far.

Just a few tips:
(1) If you've upgraded through a variety of Palm devices over the years, it might be time to rename the Backup directory and start fresh, with just your application data transferred after a hard reset. When I first got my IIIc, I had weird stability problems and AvantGo wouldn't show color.
I renamed my Backup directory and created a new, empty one, did a hard reset, and sync'd to install all my address/appt/etc. data. Then I installed all my applications "fresh." Despite having the same apps installed, the IIIc was then rock-solid, and AvantGo could see in color. I'm assuming there was something in the Preferences settings somewhere which was left over from a previous device (the same data had been through a Pilot 1000, Professional upgrade, IIIx, and Visor Deluxe before the IIIc) that was screwing things up.
Of course, this is only necessary if you have problems. Most folks should be able to go Visor Deluxe to Prism with no problems.
(2) Turn the brightness down to the lowest level that still looks good to you. For some reason this makes Graffiti work better (at least, this was the case on the IIIc). It might solve the need to press harder. It also can make a dramatic difference in battery life, almost doubling it.

Hate to tell you this but the tap harder issue is not an issue on my machine. I did note when I briefly had a IIIc that it had a slightly off digitizer and needed more pressure to tap. Not so here. I tried the brightness suggestion and did not notice any difference in tapping.
Here are a few tips to other users that are upgrading:
Action Names Datebook will cause a reset issue if you haven't installed the color icons. You can view your contacts but change to a date screen and you'll get a error and reset command. Download the color icons and install and your fixed.
TapPad Hack Driver works fine.
Middlecaps Hack works fine.
Trek Sounds Hack - turn off the start up screen and shut down screen. If they are on, you'll get an annoying click or trek sound while the Prism is in the cradle charging. It's very muted but it's there. I'd bet it has something to do with the voltage cycling through the connectors and mirror effect of turning off and on.
I even loaded my Omnisky software from the Palm Vx and didn't get a reset request. I did get an error message, obviously. Patiently (not really) awaiting the Omnisky/Minstrel springboard. I found it interesting that there were several springboards advertised in the propaganda contained within the package that are not yet available.
All together I'm pleased.

All my AvantGo channels and web pages are b/w. Are there color ones? The title bar is blue now, so that works. Thanks

Whew! Thanks for the reply. I'll stop obsessing about it now.
Now I can focus on other things, such as my 16 month old daughter having snagged my deluxe stylus from my BVDx while I was playing with my new prism. It's gotta be around here somewhere! Oh well, at least I have four more...

Ok..All my problems have been
resolved. The problem was a faulty Prism.
Received my replacement and it works like a charm.
