-- New Handspring models to be announced soon (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=17506)

I'm gonna still think that it's overclocked despite all you peopel smart, thoughtful things of prooving me wrong

As I remember, there are other ways to cool a chip. A good heatsink is one way, and it you enginerr it right, I bet you could disapate it around the entire visor (with the right kinda of case)

As for overclocking, I'm using the Clockup DA at 42 mhz, and fast DRAM, and my benchmarks kick @ss!

Well I won't be posting anything until I get something official. I don't like posting rumor items. That's what these boards are for.

HS lost their Edge fanfare to the M500 and M505. If I were them, I'd announce (assuming they will) the day after Palm announces the m125!

ooo. I can't wait!

Unless one of these has hi-res, thin form with color, and/or or SD slot along with the Springboard slot, I don't see what there is to be excited about. Maybe Handspring will suddenly allow for flash OS updates! That would be news.

I think as far as Handspring goes, the Edge was supposed to be their hot item for this year, and they're lost as to what to do next. Handspring could probably bottom the price of the Edge down to $250 and it still wouldn't sell very well.

AHEM!!! FOR EVERYONE'S INFO!!!

Columbia just so happens to be the capital of my state. It is most famous for its reputation as the hottest place in the world during the summer (ask anyone who trained at Fort Jackson). I kinda like it...SO LAY OFFA MY CITY!!

Posted by Thunderbird291 on 08-09-2001 10:18 PM:

Sorry randy-du, but I highly doubt HS oc'ed the chip. From an enginnering standpoint, it would be more trouble than it's worth. Heatsinks and heatsink paste might work a little, but the only apps that run faster are very large databases and Avantgo. Plus, the average user doesn't know what their palm's clock speed is or what Afterburner is. After all, it's all speculation.

Posted by Hoser_back_home on 08-09-2001 10:56 PM:

When i first read the 'Columbia' name, the first thing i thought of was Columbia Sportswear... you know, that outdoor clothing manufacturer?

Then I thought about a possible Handspring/Columbia sponsored model like you see in other industries (or even handhelds! aka Jordan Palm). Maybe it'll be a model sold under the 'outdoorsy' banner for people who are out and about...with a GPS module and an 'outdoorsy' look and the Columbia logo on it (remember the 'Eddie Bauer Edition Ford trucks?)

just a thought.

another Columbia i thought of was the Space Shuttle.

I remember that summer well.

Makes me even less thrilled with the name 'columbia'

You would then think that they would call it the Platinum Columbia Edition or something. Didn't both the MJ and CS Palms have the base model name in them, so people would know what they got?

If this is what HS is up to, I'll just repaint the scratched up case on my VPL and save the money. (I never have been a fan of designer things. I believe that Form Follows Function.)

Cool What about Wireless?

I'm just curious if this new device will be the one Donna talked about recently. The one that will have integrated wireless internet access?

With always on Wireless Internet (with VisorPhone built in), 16MB of RAM, PalmOS 4.0, smaller form factor, Springboard and high-res screen (Visible in the daylight) then I'll be seriously considering an upgrade! Anything less, I may just stick with my VP.

Of course, all of the above is speculation... I don't have any inside information (wish I did).

Ok, I admit it. I went to the Staples website, found some fax mumbers and sent those fake faxes. I don't know why, I thought it would be funny. It kinda was, seeing how that thread exploded. Gotcha.

Duh, I'm just kidding. But I wouldn't find it too hard to believe if it was some prank. It's just that, well, Columbia?

I'd like to return to a point that DavidH mentioned regarding the "when" of all this speculation. Rumor has it that the VPL drops to $199 and the Edge drops to $299 on "8/19." August 19th is a Sunday. This date seems logical for price drops as many electronics retailers (CompUSA, Best Buy, Staples, etc.) publish their weekly specials in the Sunday newspapers.

However...and please correct me if I am wrong...I don't ever recall HS (or any other PDA or computer maker) announcing new products on a Sunday. Could we assume that the new Ace/Columbia/Twist/Snap/Crackle/Pop/Whatever would come later during that business week, say, on Monday, August 20th or anytime thereafter?

the Jazz

If you've participated in this thread, or just enjoyed reading it and found yourself wondering, go out IMMEDIATELY and purchase Melissa Scott's new (2000) book, "the Jazz". It's in paperback by Tor books, $14.95. Read it while waiting for 8/19 to roll around. Not only is it a great book in the cyberpunk genre, but by about half way through it you will recognize yourself, all the rest of us here and this thread.

Last night I saw a UFO land behind a Staples. Elvis egressed
from the craft and delivered a shipment of Handspring "Ace's"
and "Columbia's". I would've asked Elvis about the new features,
but Bigfoot tackled me as I approached the craft. I have about
10 minutes of missing time from that experience.

Well guess what guys?
this dude is full of it! I too work for staples and I ask: why don't I have a copy of this 'newsletter'? Of course I'll be doing some checking on fri. at work BUT staples has NEVER said anything that specific in the noteable news (the staples stores newsletter). I too will believe it when I see it!

More to come from Kouz tomorrow
