-- Free ISPs for Visors (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=9248)
I just got a modem for my visor, and was wondering about the compatability of free-ISPs with the visor. In the article about going on the road with the visor, James said he finally found an free-ISP that worked, which one was that. I am going on vacation soon, and would like to be able to go online without paying the long-distance charges. Thanks everyone.

ANY ISP could work
If you are looking for ISPs to work with your handheld, any of them will work as long as you configure them properly. With AOL, you can configure the handheld to connect to it rather easily. You can configure AOL like any normal dial-up connection, but when setting the Network Preferences and click -eh, tap?- on Details. In Details (or is it Advanced? I don't have my Visor with me so I can't check it out), make sure that the connection type is SLIP, not PPP. Also, make sure the Query DNS option is set to automatic. With those options, and an access number set you can connect to AOL's network without a hitch.

I was using freeInet until they merged (?) with netzero. I was finally able to get Alta Vista (free) access to work (I have a thinmodem). They have a pretty decent listing of local access numbers.

I'm able to dial in and connect to Alta Vista's free access but can't get the DNS to work (I'm also using a Thinmodem). Are there any tricks to getting it to work? What are your Network settings?
Thanks.
