Thumbs up

I bought the Vaja leather case several weeks ago and it's working out great. Anybody else out there using this case?

I've read lots of posts from people who have the ShockSuit, the Slipper, etc. who are disappointed with the products falling apart, velcro not holding, etc. You're never going to have problems like that with this case. It's made of high quality leather and it isn't going to come apart any quicker than a baseball mit would. It uses a snap to hold the cover closed, so no velcro problems. The price is a little high, but after you've bought a few cases that don't work out, it's doesn't look too bad. I used Handspring's belt-clip case for a few weeks before the belt-clip broke. This Vaja case is a real gem.

Anybody else?

Vaja's customer support is very good, after a little less than 2 months the little oval Vaja logo stud on the cover fell off and got lost, so I contacted Vaja. After telling them my situation they sent out a new case complete with name personalization and advanced Graffiti chart, no charge!!! I consider that to be very good service, altho I hear other companies like Rhodiana have equally good service. Oh, by the way, don't worry about the stud coming off your case, I have a tendency to have problems with things that never happen to other people, must be the fact that I'm built like a thin sumo wrestler and have the gracefulness of a hungry brown bear .

Vaja vs. Rhodiana? (not really - hint: they're both great!)

I've been using a Rhodiana for several months, and think it's a great case, but my Vaja just arrived, so here are a few impressions...

I'm amazed at how well put together this case is! Words cannot describe the feel and quality of both the leather and the stitching. My IVX fits snugly in the slot and even though the Rhodiana fits a Visor beautifully, the Vaja holds it even more securely. The "work through" cover over the buttons is not cheap, flimsy material and I have had no trouble working any button from any angle - there's enough "give" in the cover material that it doesn't pull against the buttons, but not enough that it's loose. I like how unobstrusive the snap is on the back and the reset hole access is a welcome feature. I've never had much of a problem getting my stylus out of the Rhodiana, but the Vaja's stylus cut-out eliminates the issue.

I had not expected the cover to be as padded as it is, and I think it would get pretty fat if you tried to stuff too many cards into the slots, but I like the fact that it covers the entire face of the Visor. One problem with the Rhodiana is that the cover goes into the "frame" of the case, so that the lower edge of the cover can press against the buttons, given various circumstances. Several times I've found that when I've been sitting the cover has been activating a key, requiring a reset! It's only a minor annoyance, but still a negative against an otherwise fine case. With the Vaja, that problem is eliminated.

Others have mentioned how handy they've found the straps on the Rhodiana, and I agree. I've found myself using them many times. It's been mentioned before, though, that the snap for the Vaja can be snapped in place in the "open" position, making a hand-hold of sorts for it too. I wouldn't trust it hanging out over an open ravine like I might the Rhodiana, but it is quite easy to open the Vaja, snap the cover back, and have a serviceable hand-hold.

The "sling" of the belt-clip is interesting. The clip itself seems quite sturdy, though the Rhodiana design seems like it would stand up to more punishment. I'll see how it works out. Since the Rhodiana is designed to have the case "hang" from the clip, and the Vaja button is about a third of the way from the top of the case, the Vaja sits about two inches higher on the hip than the Rhodiana.

Then, a word about personalization - skip it! It's placed on the upper "margin" above the screen and for some reason is not centered! The writing is very small. Actually, the personalization is the only negative that strikes me about this case. Being off-center and even slightly tilted(!) makes it look like a cheap afterthought. Too bad.

Finally, I can't say enough about DirectCase. Every question I had was answered promtly. They sent notification of when the case was being sent, and it was, and FREE shipping to boot. How can you go wrong! I wish that all my experiences ordering cases were as positive.

Was the Vaja expensive? Well, maybe. But in a business sitaution it will have a tremendous "wow" factor and won't look like I'm pulling something out of my toolbox to carry my PDA in! I'm impressed!
