Exclamation

I have recently bought a new G4 Cube. Hooking up my cradle and installing the Palm Desktop and Syncing software was really easy. I can sync my files, back everything up and even use Avantgo just fine... But, the big problem I have is that I can't seem to get the Hotsync manager to install any new software on to my Visor Deluxe. Anyone else have this problem or know the solution?

Thanks!

Red face

Don't know if that is what's happening to me....
I HotSync'd this morning to my Cube and everything was fine. Then I went to work and Sync'd to my PC (using the guts of an old cradle as I forgot to buy the serial cradle). That went OK too.
Then I get home tonight and try to install ActiveSky and nothing... It doesn't even trigger the HotSync manager on the Cube and the cradle doesn't seem to show up on the System Profiler. I deleted the list of things to install and still nothing. I'm going to try one more restart and then reinstall the software. If that doesn't work, I'm thinking my cradle might have died... in 24 hours...

Anyone got any other suggestions..?

Question

First suggestion: look at the conduit settings to make sure the Install conduit is properly setup (Hotsync Manager -> Hotsync Menu -> Conduit settings).

Second suggestion: Try unplugging the cradle and then plugging it back in, and make sure your Hotsync is enabled. You could also try plugging the cradle into a different USB port, or into a USB hub. Failing that, try a soft reset on the Visor.

Finally, try increasing the memory allocation for both the Hotsync Manager and Conduit Manager (Select the icon, then either Get Info under the File Menu, or command-I, then Show Memory - make sure the applications aren't running or you won't be able to change the memory allocation).

I hope this helps

I had similar problems with my iMacs; it used to drive me nuts. There's a few things you should try. First, double-check your software setup. Even if the software setup is enabled, try disabling it and then re-enable it. That usually works. For some reason, I've stopped having those problems and it works great now.

Another thing is to make sure you get the system patch for MacOS 9.0.2 from the Handspring website. Otherwise, you'll find yourself timing out before you can actually transfer any data. The patch worked wonders for me!

One last thing to try:

Do a soft-reset in the cradle. This happened to me last night on my G4...after a while, it seems that the visor just forgets how to hotsync.

Also heed rosswords advice...you definitely need the update from Handspring on the Macs.

Unhappy still no luck...

Sean, I've tried plugging the cradle in everywhere - the keyboard, the screen, the hub, directly into the cube... Nothing from any of them. It doesn't show up in Apple System profiler either which makes me suspicious of the cradle of MacOS extensions. I upped the memory too and that didn't seem to do anything.

rosswords, I've enabled and disabled the software several times and no change. I even reinstalled another copy but it was the same. What is the system patch you talk about..? Do you mean the 2.6.1 desktop software..? I've got that. Is there something else I need..?

homer, I just tried a reset in the cradle and that didn't do anything either.

Could the v1.1 updater be to blame...??? That was one of the things I installed on the PC since the last time it worked on the Mac....
Also, does anyone know a way to test the cradle apart from Syncing..??

Unhappy Backup Conduit is the culprit for me

I have a G4 cube and a Prism. I have never once backed up my visor successfully. If the backup conduot is active, without fail, my mac freezes, requiring a reboot. I am new to Apple (recent convert after 8 years of Wintel Hell) and new to Palm OS, so my great troubleshooting skills -- from 7 years with windows -- are virtually useless. However, if I disable the backup conduit, everything else -- install, entourage and avant go all sync without a hitch...

Alsmost livable, except I would really like to be able to backup my prism....
I have an open tech support ticket and am supposed to be getting a response in 24 hrsa. will keep you posted.

You will NEVER see the USB cradle in the Apple System Profiler. This is because the USB cradle has absolutely no circuitry in it. It is simply a USB cable with a connector and a nice piece of plastic to hold the Visor onto that connector.

Wink

After posting my first message, I went and downloaded the Palm Desktop update for Mac OS 9.04. I haven't had a problem since.
