I have now received and played with the much-discussed backup module. I can only give it high marks. It backed up about 5 megs in a few minutes. (It did 80% of that in about 90 seconds, then gulped when, I suspect, it got to my Teal Doc e-books).

It is simple and nearly automatic. Plug it in, it pops up on the screen with only two options---backup or restore. Click one of them. You're done.

I also see that it fits perfectly in the back. SO basically, I'm just going to keep it there all the time.

It meets all my needs and expectations. Of course, I haven't tried a restore yet!

I would suggest keeping it seperate from the Visor rather than plugged in the back. If you lose the Visor and the backup module is plugged in, you lose both, plus your data... Instead, store the backup module in a seperate safe location -- e.g. a different pocket, briefcase, luggage, office, etc.

Walter, when I travel, I absolutely intend to do that. At the moment, it's just convenient for storage. One surprise and failing is that Handspring delivers nothing in which to store the module. I hate to just dump it into my pocket on a regular basis.

I keep mine in one of the handy-dandy internal pockets of my Rhino-Pak 2000. I usually stash my BVDx in there only while moving from place to place, and then put it in Handspring's supplied leatherette case for carrying around at work, etc. I keep the Rhino-Pak itself inside my laptop bag, so it's somewhat unlikely that I'll end up losing it.

Has anyone had the unfortunate experience of having to restore from one of these modules. Does it work? Smoothly? Are all apps and DBs successfully restored? What about registrations and preferrences?

If you read my review, I did a test where I did a hard reset and then restored everything. Launcher III was the only thing that was different.

I vaguely remember a rumor that the backup module fits in the case that comes with every GameBoy cartridge.

Can anyone confirm/deny?

The rumor was correct. I keep my back-up module in a one such container. The game boy container is slightly bigger than the module, but it works well. If you have children, don't leave the back-up module on your desk at home. My young children see it in the gameboy case and run off with it thinking it is a new game for them.

I tried using the backup module to restore this morning. The result was great. AS was indicated in James H. review, the only thing that was not right was Launch III. Restore puts Visor software in one tab and all the rest in another. The only thing I had to do was to move other apps into the right tabs. I can handle that. And yes, it fits in the gameboy game cartridge box (I already stole one from my son).
