Question

Hey all.

I just had a customer return a VDX and modem because he could not get it to send or recieve his email. From what I was able to determine, the hardware was working fine. I was curious to know what experiences anyone else has had with both the modem springboard and whatever mail sofware you are using with it so I can figure out what happened. I'm waiting for the 56k modem or wireless springboards before I buy one myself.

Thanks!

I'm using the modem with ProxiMail, ProxiWeb, and AvantGo. I've dialed into my personal ISP (mindspring) from various locations across this country and Canada without any problems.

I've also used ProxiWeb to get my email from my work address without a problem. I can't use AvantGo or ProxiWeb through this connection as there is a firewall and these apps don't have the ability to deal with it.

It's quite simple really. I had my visor set up (network settings) before i got the modem. When it arrived, i plugged it in, dialed up, and connected!

The Visor and modem cannot send/receive e-mail or surf the Internet out of the box. It can connect to an ISP via the modem and the Prefs/Network settings. But without 3rd party software as mentioned by Hoser, it will not work.

All three of those programs listed are Freeware.
Proximail does POP and SMTP for upto 5 e-mail settings/accounts.
ProxiWeb is just that an WWW client.
AvantGo was primarily an offline web browser, but the latest version includes an on-line browsing capability.

I feel sorry for the individual that returned the Visor and modem, (s)he does not know what they are missing.

Eudora also offers a beta for a POP3 client and a text-only web browser.

I use the Handspring modem with an obscure little program called "PaPi-Mail" which I find is a bit more useful than Eudora. Unlike the other Palm email software I've seen (but, curiously, like the email package on my Psion 7) it does not actually download your email on a connect: it shows the sender and subject, and then lets you choose whether to download the message (if it's text email you want to read), leave it alone (if you know it's a two meg MP3 a friend is sending and you can use it till you get home anyway), or delete it (MAKE UP T $100 MILLION A DAY, CASH, WORKING AT HOME!).

It's rather handy!
