I am not getting how to input the ".8" shortcut on the backlight? can someone enlighten me to how to make this shortcut work exactly?

I don't have my visor yet so I can't verify this, but I've heard other people say that the greenlight hack (requires hackmaster) will work to invert your backlight. You can find it at http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~dianders/pilot/

for some reason the .8 command dosen't work (or at least i have been unable to make it work). works fine on my IIIx, but not the visor dlx...

I got it to work. Here's how. First go to memo pad. Start a new memo. Now write a cursive lower case L, then tap the screen twice, and finally write the number 8 and Walla! you should see [Invertng Backlight]. To reverse the setting, simply repeat these steps.

thanks for the hack information... wow... so much better - for those of use who remember what *good* backlighting was... although the hack isn't exactly it (the screen still turns black if there is any light available) I am much happier with the hack than I was before... anyone have an idea why they changed that feature to begin with? They just had to ask me and I would have told them it was a stupid change.

I get the [Inverted Backlight] thing, but it doesn't seem to make a difference in what the screen looks like.

Newbie question...

I've never owned a Palm PDA, and am trying to soak up as much info as possible while I (im)patiently wait for my Visor to arrive.

Reading this discussion, I am led to wonder one little thing: What does INVERTING BACKLIGHT actually mean, and why would one want to do it?? :-)

"Inversion" is what happens to the pixels on the Visor when the backlight is activated. I'll assume that you know already that the screen is a grayscale LCD panel. Well, when the backlight is activated, all of the pixels that were activated deactivate and those that were deactivated activate. (Sorry for my confusing language) In other words, the white areas become black and the black areas become white. So the screen will in one respect look like an old DOS screen, where all of the characters are illuminated, while the rest of the screen area is blackened.

I think Palm chose this route, and moved away from the traditional, non-inverted light, because it's easier to read text. It's just a little annoying though, because you can't use positive-dependent features, like image viewers, without seeing the funky negative image. I've grown to prefer inversion, because it's much less distracting (or attracting) in movie theatres, where the traditional, bright backlight would turn heads.
