Now everytime I hotsync I get the following message in the log:

-- Unable to retrieve desktop file list
OK WordSmith

What does it mean? How can I fix it? I've done a hard reset with full reinstall, but the message came back
Sounds like some kind of problem with WordSmith. Send them an email... they're very helpful and responsive.
