Unhappy My Prism won't seat in the cradle

Can someone please help me. I put my Prism in its cradle to recharge and hotsynch and nothing happened--no flashing recharge light and no hot synch. It doesn't feel like it is snugly seated in the cradle. I tried to use my travel charger and it will not lock into the Prism==the cable just falls out. Could something have come loose on the bottom of the Prism like the connections pins or something. I am desperate. I have had my Prism for about 14 months and cannot believe it could be broken. I take better care of it than I do my husband (just kidding, honey). PLEASE HELP.

There were some reports of Prism's where the hotsync connector came loose in the case. Since you say that "the cable just falls out" would seem to indicate this might be your problem. You should be able to tell by looking at it. Being 14 months old and presumably out of warranty, I'm not sure if Handspring will do anything about it however, but it's still worth a try.

Prism with a loose/broken hotsynch connector?

What would it look like if it was loose? I think this might be the problem because I can wiggle the connector with my fingernail. Can I fix it or do I have to send it to HS for a fix? Any idea of the cost? I can't imagine how it came "loose," I never take it out of the case except to hotsynch.

Since it is out of warranty, you could use the little screwdriver that is in the stylus (Unscrew the top of the stylus) and open the Prism. there is not too much that can go wrong as long as you are careful. Once you get it open, it may just be a matter of snapping the internal connector back in place, or replacing a loose screw.

If you do not feel comfortable opening it up, have your husband do it. That way, when he screws it up, you can blame him and he will have to buy you a new one!

Good luck!

Doug

There are others that reported this problem. Try contacting Handspring about it. If it's a "design" problem with the early units, they might replace it for you.

Loose hot synch connection

Thanks guys. My fab hubbie and I took the back off and sure enough, the connection was loose inside. We snapped it back in and it is working. Should we solder the connections? If we do, do we solder just the connections at each end or do we have to solder the individual silver (8) connectors as well? I contacted HS but they don't work on sat/sun. What's up with the $20 fee for phone support now? I had 2 friends who bought Visors on my raves about the great phone support (and free!!).

My guess would be that the contact connections are ok (especially since it's working). The connections at each end are probably all that need to be fixed. Just be careful when you're in there with the soldering iron.

Broken hot synch connection

God Bless Handspring customer support. I just got a response from HS and they are going to replace by Prism in 3-5 days--no charge. Dan stated my unit is still under warranty (14 months later?) and the exchange is free. Of course, it will be replaced with a reconditioned unit but at least it will work. I am going to leave the soldering to the experts. I'm a nurse not a mechanic.

Cool for nightnurse

thats the thing abt hs tech support. ( i presume that you called them and not the customer service). Because as far as it was when i was a part of the tech support, they used to do the returns for customers.

and it is not surprizing that they do observe leniency as far as warranty periods are concerned.

If this is your first replacement then you unit will be coming in a week and u ll get to send the old one back in the same box the new one comes in.

as far as your prob goes, i never saw a user who would be brave enuff to risk opening the thing. but if u have the knack then there is not stopping you. I do remember hearing of prisms with inner slots loose and if u wiggle in your finger at the casing sorrounding the connectors, u could feel it loose. the slightest movement was enuff to block the Hotsync.

With the refurbished one thta you get. make sure you perform the hotsyncs and test all applications and functioning as soon as possible as this time maybe if something goes wrong u wont have such niceties being bestowed upon you (remember this one will be refurbished).

But Do have good luck with it.

God Bless.
