I am contemplating switching from the Dx to the prism. HGow do I get all the STUFF off of one and on to the other? can I use the backup module and just do a restore or do I need to re load everything? HELP

Hotsync your DX.

Give your new Prism the same username as your DX and hotsync.

Done.

You may want to load a program such as BackUpAll on the DX first to make sure that absolutetly everything on your DX get's hotsynced into the backup folder on your computer before syncing the Prism.

I went through the same thing. When I bought my Prism I did not have the Backup Module. I just followed the installation instructions by installing the new Palm Desktop software and did a HotSync choosing the User Name for my Deluxe. When the HotSync completed my Prism was just like my Deluxe. All Third-party applications were installed and so was all the data.

However, I now own the Backup Module and find that it works just as well to do the same thing. I used it to restore my Prism after I got it replaced. It is a very simple process, you plug it in and hit restore.

One note on using the Desktop software to do the restore, any applications or data that has been "Archived" will be installed on the new device. To prevent this, delete all data in the "Archive" folder or use the Backup Module.

It is my belief that both procedures will yield the same result, the choice is yours. However, I would not delete anything from the Deluxe until you know that the Prism has the all the information you want on it and it is working like you want it to.

When I upgraded from a Palm IIIe to a Prism, I attempted to simply hotsync my IIIe's data to the new Prism-- I ended up with some fatal errors and had to do a hard reset.

Subsequently, I went into the Palm directory on my hard drive and deleted .pdb files which might have been problematic. Hackmaster hacks, ESPEICALLY those that provide features that now exist in OS 3.5, are most likely what was causing the hotsync problem between units.

It sounds harder than it really was for me to do-- in less than half an hour after the first (unsuccessful) attempt at moving the data, I had all my core apps data moved over, and from there I just selectively reinstalled other apps.

With a bit of patience, you should be able to migrate from a Deluxe to a Prism without losing any personal data.

Use the backup module, it will save you much hassle. I used it when I upgraded from my VDx to my Prism and it worked perfectly. I just made sure I deleted any apps that I wouldn't need with the new OS (like IR link), before I backed up the VDx.

Before I had the backup module (and when I accidently pressed "Backup" after a hard reset instead of "Restore") it took me a great deal of time to find out which databases I needed for programs and so on.

I agree with Sluggo. It was really just as easy to just install the programs I wanted. Of course I hot synic my Visor and my home and work PC's at least twice a day. Since Outlook had my most critical data, I syniced my Dx, installed the new hot synic manager and then did a hot synic with the Prism.

I had actually installed all my favorite apps on the Prism (mostly games) but I quickly discovered that if they weren't in color, they just weren't as much fun.

By the way, I love my Prism!
