-- How Often Do You Synch? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13839)

Posted by Keefer Lucas on 04-08-2001 12:59 AM:

When I first bought my VDX I thought that I would synch every couple of days. Wrong. I underestimated the desirablility of carrying all my email with me at all times, and of having a freshly updated smorgasborg of Avantgo pages available at all times. I guestimate that I synch as many as six times a day (I have cradles at both home and work).

As far as I am concerned updating Avantgo via Synch cradle is at least 75% as cool as a wireless connection at 1/3 the price (with no monthly fee either). At least that is what I keep telling myself.

How often do you synch?

I used to synch quite a bit, uploading new software and such. Now that I have a MemPlug though, I usually install apps through my SmartMedia reader. Still, I HotSynch about 3 times a day (Why not? My Prism is in the cradle anyways if I'm not using it)

I have this bad obsessive compulsive thing about syching my VPL. It's almost like the little "chime" sooths my soul. I agree that Avantgo is pretty cool, almost as cool as being wireless, it's what I use my Visor for the most while at work....that and playing Tetris

Cool How Often Do You Sync?

I sync up 6 to 10 times a day at the following times.

First thing in the morning: Updates personal email and Avantgo.

When I get to work: Updates Outlook schedule and backs up any changes from the previous evening.

During work: Anytime I make a lot of changes to my schedule or contacts. I also do a backup to my backup module sometime during the day.

Just before leaving.: Updates any changes between Visor and Outlook.

When I get home: Updates home computer with schedule changes.

If I install software or add data to my visor. If I make any changes in the evening, I also backup to the backup module.

Gee, do I need to get a life?

Smile VisorCentral Mobile

Hi,
Now that I started using "Plucker" - a free offline web viewer for Palm, I sync my Visor each time I retrieve a updated version of VisorCentral Mobile Edition. I have started creating some e-books in Plucker format also .
It's really a cool application even though it has it wreakness and strong points.

Regards,
Byron

Cool

I usually sync everyday. Sometimes I let it go, and and it maybe every other. I do not mind if my AvantGo pages are a little old, if I have not read them yet.

I normally sync once a day. I use AutoSync so I dock my Visor in the cradle before I go to bed and at 5:30 a.m., it syncs. This way, I have the morning's AvantGo info before I go to work.

Of course, I just got an Eyemodule 2 so I have to sync every time I take a picture so I can view the pic on my monitor. In those cases, I usually cancel the AvantGo updates in my haste to see how my pictures turned out.

And now for something completely different...

I only synch once or twice a week depending on what I'm doing. I do backup to Backup Modules (one at home and one in my briefcase) every day. The only reason I synch is to make sure I'm pulling current data out of my BrainForest database into documents and the occasional software install.

I think the responses in this poll/thread are going to depend greatly on usage patterns so I hope nobody is looking for any sort of "right" answer. Currently I use an iMac, iBook, VDx, and a QCP-860 (cell phone w/ e-mail) to handle my business and personal stuff. Before I got the iBook, I synch'd the VDx more often so that I'd have my e-mail available on the VDx (via MultiMail) when I was away from the office.

I use a backup module (now MemPlug) so I only sync once or twice a week, or when I load new programs.

I am curious about those who read e-mail or use AvantGo multiple times a day. If you are at a computer that much, why use your Visor to read web content or e-mail? This is not a criticism, I am just curious and want to make sure I am not missing out on something.

I'm often away from my desk & get the urge for web content. It's getting to the point where if I go for more than 10 minutes without new information, news, knowledge, I go batty.

Avantgo Retention

I find that I actually read content in Avantgo format, vs. simply skimming articles on the web. Its easier to manage at the breakfast table in the morning, and I often bring my VDX to bed, just to read. While I would probably never read a 1000 word article on the web, I will frequently read lengthy collumns via Avantgo.

I load up my email when I get home from work, then yield my computer to the kids, who occupy my desktop until bed time. I can read and respond to both personal and professional email (I actually enjoy graphiti), then synch with my desktop to send (sometimes while the kids continue to play their games). To some extent my $200 VDX has spared me the expense of a second desktop at home (at least for the time being).
