Cheap(er) SmartMedia cards
Just a heads up...you can get a 64 MB card for $33 from www.newegg.com which includes FedEX saver shipping.
Is there any significant difference between these SM cards and any others?

hmm - others have said they worked! that's all that matters to me!
I think I might pick one up for me trip. I could always use a total of 124 MB of memory

It's worked fine with my MP3 player. I've also bought two 64 MB cards from Fry's for 36 bucks each and they've played without difficulty.
Here comes the truth about CHEAP(er) Smart Media Cards
The cheap ones consume so much battery life that before you know it, you are hopeless without power.
Other than that, they are the same and maybe life is 1/5 shorter than on the popular ones.

It all started way back in February 2000 with a Blue VDX.
I bought the 64mb SM Card and a USB Card Reader. They took off $5 for buying the two together (shipping was only $4). Total came to $57. Best deal I've seen. Ordered it on a Friday afternoon and got it by the next Wednesday at noon.
I haven't used it with my Memplug yet because there was that issue with going over 44mb (w/ a 64mb card). PI said they solved it with v1.62, but I am watching their group on Yahoo to see if anyone still has problems. Works great in my Olympus C-3000 dig camera! 84 pics at 2048x1536.
The reader works ok. I have to start Explorer first then plug the Reader into my USB hub in order for it to read the SM Card. It is a generic Reader and I can't find a manufacturer on it to look for an updated driver. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a fix?
Thanks,
brogrens

I am using a newegg.com Mr. Flash 64MB CF card ($33 shipped, I believe?) in my FlashPlus unit and it works great. There is a higher power consumption than I would have expected, and it is absolutely unsurprising to me that this is the penalty we pay- SOMETHING had to be different for that kind of price savings!
I also got the dual CF/SM card reader. it was a pain to install (typically bad instructions and weak support), but it is going great now, and it really makes a difference in using the big memory card. I can create folders, shuffle things around, etc. a LOT easier with the card reader than by using FAFilemover- it also means I am not using batteries to do it!
Right now, I have it loaded with things to read, reference books, 'single file apps' (apps that are just the one file to load or move, so I do not forget a key part or mess them up too bad) that I do not use often, games I do not want in there every day, and so on- and the card is only 3/4 full!
Oh, yeah, I am also using it as a back-up site for JackBack, so it is acting like my back-up module as well.

Crikey, now I have to ask....what do people have that they use enough to make it nessicery to have 128MB+ of Palm memory? I can understand, being able to hold everything you'll ever need, especially at these prices, but 16MB suits me just fine....
I use my 64 MB compact flash card to store maps of the whole state of Utah. That way when I'm out geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com) I can find my location to where I need to go with my Garmin eTrex connected via hotsync.
On my 64 MB CF card, I have:
Several E-texts- casual reading, poetry (inspirational, fun, and stuff I am trying to memorize). Whenever possible, all texts are in a CSpotRun-freindly format so I can use FlashPlus to read it.
Several reference texts and files- a couple copies of the Bible and study works, world almanac, lots and lots of refernce materials (Scout requirements and supportive documents, the Constitution, etc.)
Maps (Ubigo for my HandyGPS, Mapopolis, SplashPhoto maps of specific locations, etc.)
Some video clips and players for special occasions (applause, birthday greetings, etc.)
Lots and lots of 'one file' applications that are easy to bring back and forth as needed. Tipping and tax calculators, "your age in other animal years' calculator, compasses, thunder/lightening calculator, stopwatch, bunches of games, some utilities (UnDupe, IRLink, etc.), a bank of emulators and so on (PocketC, etc.) and readers for specific formats (databases, etc.)
I also use JackBack to do a full backup daily.
I am running about 2/3 full. I would love to store more photos, etc., but so far most image viewers on the Deluxe are just not very good quality, and I cannot yet find software to display them off the CF card.

I use it to store the maps from Streetfinder Deluxe. I haven't tried using the CF card to store waypoints and stuff from my eTrex on it. I don't think the is a program out yet that will do this.
