-- USB on NT (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2665)
Is there any way to get my USB port to work under NT? How about Win2K? I have NT on my laptop, and just realized that I have a USB port hidden behind one of the little doors. I really don't want to have to put Win98 back on here.

I think your best bet will be to just buy the serial cradle. I use NT as well, and the only Serial-USB adapter I have seen costs $70!

Funny you should ask that question. I was about to post the same question. My IT dept tells me NT doesn't support USB and niether will Win2K. Rumor has it there is a work around. We keep working at, but any help or warnings would be apreciated.
I've been looking into exactly this question. It turns out that even though Windows 95B does support some USB it doesn't support it in the way that the Visor requires. This is not a Handspring problem. Other people have reported that their (for example) digital camera USB link doesn't work on Windows 95B.
Windows NT does not support USB. In a Microsoft memo on their web page (I don't have the URL handy) they say "Windows 2000, formerly Windows NT 5.0, will not support USB".
So it appears at this time that the only solutions for Windows is to either use USB in Windows 98 only, or use the serial cradle in 95 and NT.
So far I havn't heard anything regarding the USB connections to Macs. I would assume that it works fine.
USB WILL be in Win2k... I've been running Win2k for months and it works fine for most USB devices (the Visor is broken but...)
The Macs also work great.
well of course the macs work great! but if you are having trouble may i sugest downloading the newest USB driver for www.apple.com ? and my i remind u they were the first computer company to make USB widley used (imac remember)

I just received my Delux yesterday; great results so far. However I have an NT laptop.
Has anyone heard from Handspring if they are willing to trade the USB cradle for a serial one?
Or better; how hard would it be to sync with the IR port? I thought NT did not support IR well...
Dru Lee,
I'm curious to know the URL for the memo you mentioned. The link below indicates that win2000 does support USB.
http://www.microsoft.com/HWDEV/input/default.htm
I searched, but I can't find the memo you mentioned.
Dave
Win2000 final release WILL support USB
I have Win2K final version (don't ask) and it still shows the driver function error.
Frustrating... if it's not one thing, it's another.

Someone mentioned IR syncing with NT. I've got it working fine on my IBM Thinkpad 770 using IBM's Workpad Sync. Do a search on this site's forums for more more info.
I have heard of others with NT having issues. It all comes down to the make and model of computer you have. IBM sells an OEM'd Palm line as the Workpad and also bundle them with Thinkpads.
I can't verify this claim, but I got it from another group's board. Here it is:
There are companies who make USB adapters and drivers for Win NT 4.0. Inside Out Netowrks makes one they call the "Edgeport." Drivers for it are available for download from their website: www.ionetworks.com/support/epdrivers.html. I tried installing the driver in my Compaq Presario 1690 running NT 4.0 and they installed without any problem. "Devices" in Control Panel shows the USB device to be installed and the service is started. I haven't been able to test it yet, however, because the USB camera I have detects NT and won't install its software. I also uninstalled the driver without any problems and it did not appear to cause any problems in NT or leave anything behind after uninstalling it. You might check this driver out. I'll test if I can come up with another USB peripheral to try it with. If anyone has any success with this or any other driver, please post results here. BTW, there is a list of a number of companies that make USB drivers for various OS's here: www.allusb.com/products/P10276.html
frankc,
You mean you haven't tried to hotsync your Visor yet?!! Or are you lurking to decide whether or not to buy one? Perhaps someone else in SF can get together with you for an experiment...

I don't know about if is is or ever will be possible on NT4. But USB works perfectly inder Win2K.
You will need the new Win2K compatible HS software; see: http://www.handspring.com/support/t...ownload_yes.asp
