My Edge Is No More :-(

In the blink of an eye, this morning, at the post office... a mere accidental sweep of my hand and the edge hurtled to the floor...

The damage: a large impact crack on the bottom left side of the screen... big cracks spreading over the glass. No LCD appeared to be damaged, just the glass on top. The big disappointment, however, is that the digitizer is totally busted. I can still turn it on and off and read the display, and use the hardware buttons, but no screen-related activity is possible.

Oh, and for anyone who was wondering about the durability of Handspring's Hard Metal Case for the Edge (the one with the pimples) .... my Edge was in the case when it fell. :-\

So anyway, since my clumsiness isn't covered under warranty, and I didn't have a protection plan (nahhhhh, I'll never need it...), I either have to pay for Handspring to repair it, or buy a new one.

Suggestions? On whether I should repair or buy new, and if buy new, which Visor should I get?

Hmm. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try. It is still under warranty, although the warranty is supposed to cover defects in workmanship. not accidental damage by the user. Ah well... anyone else get HS to replace stuff due to accidental damage? I had two VDX's and one Edge replaced, but those were all due to defects in workmanship...

Get it repaired. It's no good like it is. Once repaired, then decide if you want to keep it or not. Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.

AAHH Maybe you should have titled this my Edge no more!! With the Edge's weak sales, and HS admitting it was a mistake and all, well, you scared me there for a minute.

My condolonces about your edge. Frankly, I'm surprised it didn't survivie the fall. it's one tough little mother, the toughest PDA out there, IMO.

Good luck getting it replaced.

Repair Screen

From Handspring's site:

----
If your handheld's screen has been broken, cracked or scratched Handspring will be happy to arrange a repair. For Visor Prism the cost of a screen replacement is US$100.00. For all other Handspring handheld products, the cost of a screen replacement is US$85.00.
----

So I guess that's not too unreasonable. Certainly cheaper than getting a brand new Visor. $89.25 total including tax. Nothing else seems to be wrong with it other than the broken screen. I'll let you know how it goes.

Strangely enough, I was looking at cnet.com for the Edge and it's not in any of their "tools" anymore.. you can still weed it out, but it disappeared from all their normal comparisons..

http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/...p;qn=Handspring

I'm sure it doesn't mean anything but it's weird and got me thinking the same thing =(

Err... I just looked at that link, and the Edge is definitely there...

Hmm, I was about to recommend pdaslostorstolen.com, but the site appears to be down at the moment. It's not clear from their message if they're not issuing any new PDA policies, or if the site is just down for maintenance.

I insured my Prism with them for about $5.00/month, and it's great for peace of mind. I still take good care of my Prism, but I'm no longer obsessive/compulsive about it; if anything happens, I'll only be out a few days' time without my Visor instead of another $100 (for screen repair) or $399 (replacement if it gets lost/stolen.)

I wonder if it's possible to cover a PDA under a homeowners/renters policy... has anyone here tried it?

[disclaimer]I'm not an insurance salesman, just an ordinary guy so keep that in mind.[/disclaimer]

A PDA should be covered. It would fall under the "home electronics" coverage area. As such it will likely be covered only up to a certain limit - usually $5000.

That having been said, your homeowners/renters policy is pretty useless to just cover your PDA: Unless your deductable is down at $100, a claim for a broken or stolen PDA will be pointless. Now if you have many other items stolen/damaged/destroyed at the same time - then the total would likely be high enough to file a claim and get some money back. Oh, your coverage should also be "replacement cost" coverage. Or they will just pay the actual market value of the claim which is much lower than a new equipment would cost.

Wink

If you decide to get another Edge, I have one that I used for one month. It's in perfect condition and I'll sell it to you for $260 plus a Visor Slim case made for the Edge.

A possible solution for you...

I think you told us your own solution...

I think with enough discussions with Handspring, they would replace your Edge for free. You had it in THEIR case, which THEY manufacture to protect your Edge, and it did NOTHING. So technically, their case was falsely advertised as being a PROTECTIVE case rather than simply a decorative one. They might argue with you a little about this, but you should likely win the argument.

Good luck.

Well, it's too late for that. I had already called them and requested a repair, so my new Edge is on the way... for $89.25. So that's settled, I'm not arguing with them, the end.

Now to address your point. I really don't see how I COULD win such a case (a case case... ha ha...), frankly. Handspring does not guarantee their cases for any particular level of protection. I think the general idea is that the protective case is suppose to protect it from the typical bumps and bruises of everyday life - being bumped around inside a briefcase or bookbag, dropped a foot or so onto the counter, etc. I, on the other hand, practically *threw* the Visor at the floor from a height of four feet. I don't think the case really has enough protection for that sort of thing. Looking at the case right now (I have it open next to me), it is really nothing more than a few thin pieces of metal-coated plastic. There is no shock-absorbing material, no foam padding, nothing along those lines. So my guess it is intended to protect from minor dings and scratches and minor impacts, but not from a high velocity impact...

Companies which intend their products to offer a specific level of protection usually explicitly state so, and offer something to back it up. The Kryptonite "Manhattan" bike lock, for example, comes with a guarantee that it will not be broken, and offers cash up front if that guarantee is ever violated.... Handspring's case, on the other hand, came with absolutely nothing but the box. No warranty, no terms, etc... as is, no guarantees.

You know- I wonder if we are maybe getting a little , er... um... I guess 'odd' is the best word here. We go to a certain website- and something is missing or 'been deleted' and we instantly seem to assume that something bad has happened.

I wonder how many rumors here and some other boards I visit are started because someone took part of their board down for maintenance or it was just acting glitchy at the time?

Talking My Edge is Back :-)

On Monday I called Handspring to process a repair on my Visor Edge screen. I gave them my credit card info, they gave me an RMA number, and today (Wednesday) I received the replacement. I really can't complain.

I think I'll be staying with the Edge for a while. :-)
