Unhappy

I got my Visor Deluxe last summer, and I still haven't gotten any modules. Anytime I see one I really want, like Soundsgood, I see the price tag. And I see one like Eyemodule or a GPS module and I think, "that's cool. But what's the point? I already have a digital camera. And what student needs to know where in the world he is? There's a window on my bus!" Am I deprived? I like my visor as it is. The only major accesory I ever bought for it was the Stowaway. I bought the visor over a palm for one reason: the unlimited expansion. Almost a year later, I still have no modules. I think Handspring should sell, or even include with the visor, a cheap module with a "cool factor" through the roof, to get people like me obsessed with modules.

Sorry to hear that out of 25 modules (Palmgear shows 42 but some are the same) you haven't found one you like or could afford. Being 14 may have something to do with that although you got the stowaway because you needed it, I guess. I haven't got one of those. All the modules I got, except the Visor phone (backup, 8meg flash, 2V, Springport modem, eyemodule 1 & 2, Soundsgood) +Platinum, I didn't pay full price for, getting on sale, ebay or on the buy/sell forum.

That pretty much says it all. If it's doing what you need it to do, I'd say it's serving it's purpose. You still have the capability to expand if and when that cool module appears with your name on it.

I have a Backup Module, Thinmodem, SpringPort, and a CF adapter... other than the Backup, I hardly use the others... but it's still nice to know I can expand my trusty VDx at any given time. I'd really like the wireless ethernet module but I think it will be too pricey for me to justify (unless I can get my employer to spring for it!).

Yeah, yer doin' all right. I only have a few myself, incl. EM1 & EM2. You may have a digicam, but the EM2 is just so unobtrusive. If I were 14 again & it came out, I'd be slippin' it under all the girls' dresses.
(Uh ... jk, of course.)
(You can't be too PC these days, eh?)

I don't know exactly how many modules there are, but it's not really that many, as j762538 said. Several modules are "just" software, there are a couple of different modems, GPS's, two MP3 players, etc. Some stuff like MP3 players or digicams you wouldn't buy again if you already had a standalone unit.

I too don't see anything really compelling except for flash memory/backup/MemPlug (which also seem to be some of the cheaper modules).

I think HS should put a link to the CF adapters on their site, even though they're not true Springboards.

You're right about most of these modules, but the appeal of the eyemodule digicams is their omnipresence. Lots of cameras have better picture quality, but superior picture quality doesn't matter when you don't carry the camera around with you because it's too cumbersome.

Keep in mind that a 64MB Rio 500 goes for Diamond Rio goes for around $235. A 64MB SoundsGood module is nearly $85 less.

I got my SoundsGood for $149 on PalmGear, so the cost differential is even steeper than that.

I guess the question I have is what would be a compelling expansion option for Ernie? I personally use my modules pretty often - Backup almost every day, InnoPak all the time (it's what sits in the slot day in and day out), Minstrel frequently (several times a week), others less often.

Exclamation >>

Ack. Well, I must say that the RIO 500 has dropped in Price SIGNIFICANTLY. Also, it *does* offer expandability VIA SM cards.

Which brings me to my next module theory: The Memplug. The Memplug seems to be the only adequately priced module for what it does, and in the long run, it pays for itself. (A 64 MB SM card costs the same as an 8MB Springboard!) Sure, the springboard can do more, but depending on your use, the Memplug is a deal!

Especially if you have a SM enabled device (such as my RIO!)

Do the math again.

Whoops. That's what I get for posting before I've had my morning coffee, and while my Prism is in the cradle unable to assist me with simple math.

How embarassing.

Well, a >$100 price drop can do that to a person.

I think your age has a lot to do with it & your access to money. If you don't need a GPS then don't think of it as not a cool module, it is. I think when we all bought our Visors we were all wowed by the possibility of turning it into something, but what is out there that you want your Visor to do? Then theres the part about money, everyone wants some fabulous module thats cheap as dirt!

Heh, I'll just tape it to my shoe, no one will notice...

Some of us (me included) were thinking that new uses would miraculously pop up. Like when people started with computers a long time ago, not many dreamed of global email, WWW, Black and White...

I always thought maps were cool on PDAs, and hence GPS's too. But the money factor there comes into play, not because I can't afford the GPS module, but because I can't afford to travel anywhere to put it to optimal use!

So far my most compelling Visor add-on has been the cable to connect it with my cell phone. Now all I need is a nice case that can hold both the Vdx and cell together.
