I was reading Innogear's FAQ on their upcoming MP3 player. It states that the memory cards (Up to 64MB) can be used for data and application storage on the Visor. They're hoping on a sub $200 price for the 64MB unit. At that price, and if the memory can be used as stated, why would I want to by an $80 flash memory module from HandSpring? Seems like this would be a more economical route.

I know it's not here yet, but music and added storage, wow!

Innogear is going to have a hard time as long as those memory card prices stay up. With the
ZERO memory unit costing $99, I think $225 is
a more likely price for the 64 mb configuration, unless you know a good third party solution for supercheap cards... the ones they reference in the FAQ look pretty specialized, to boot.

The Rio is going to kill them if they can't
go lower, and even $200 is pushing it, IMHO.

Yes, but that wasn't entirely my point. It may be a bit pricey as just an MP3 player, but if it can be used for storage, as the 8MB Module from HandSpring can be used, then even at $225 it would be worth the price.

My question would be: can the PalmOS recognize the memory in the MiniJam as Flash ROM, or only the MiniJam software. It would be nice to pop in the MiniJam with two 64MB cards and have a 128MB, well, a 136MB Visor, but not so cool if the MiniJam memory can only be used for cold storage, and you have to use the MiniJam software to transfer apps to internal memory to run.

Does anyone know a price for the MMC cards that the MiniJam uses? I skimmed the SanDisk page, but didn't see any prices.

My guess would be that the visor can NOT access the MP3 memmory...

I think they did not implement this otherwise they would have made this public since this would be a great selling point...

on the technical side, the Visor cannot adress 64Mb with doing all kinds of tricks... the processor simply cannot handle that much memmory...

Too bad because I liked the Idea...

The sandisk site showed the price of a
16 Mb MMC as a simply outrageous $49

Their information looked out of date, possibly. I suspect that even if you find another MMC dealer, you won't be able to get
64 Mb of MMC for under $139 or so until perhaps the end of the year. I did a search
(not very exhaustive) for such cards online, finding stuff mostly around $150. I don't see how innogear will keep costs down...

Although $50 for 16MB sounds like alot, that is the current price. I have been looking to add memory to my Rio and that's what it costs. As far as being able to use that memory, I do not think it is possible. From what I have read at the innogear website, this is almost an entirely separate unit. Which makes me wonder, why spend $200 on this? I would just buy a Rio.

$50.00 for 16Mbs might seem like a lot, but if you are using it for storing Visor data it still beats the Springboard modules.

Of course, if any manufacturer's smart they'll introduce a CF / MMC drive, or even a COMBO drive (which would ROCK my world. 8-)

Checking compactflash.org and the Visor tech docs I don't see any real obstacle. It seems the springboard bay could accomadate a module that would accept the CF formfactor. CF only needs 3.3v, same spec for the the springboard. So, who can be persuaded to make one?
