-- 8MB Flash Module or Backup Module (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=8086)

Question

I need everyone's opinion--should I first purchase the backup module or the 8mb flash module for my Visor Deluxe ??

Personally, I bought the backup module first because I don't have or want access to a computer to hot-sync all the time. The backup is a one-step-self-contained-idiot-prof-save-your-butt device that backs up the entire Visor with out hassles. When, not if, your Visor has to be cold reset, you will thank yourself that you have it.

I also have an 8mb flash module. Its sits in the desk waiting for me to find I use for it, but the backup module is used daily.

Lightbulb

RobertT said it well...When I first got my Visor I wasn't clear on the differences between the two modules, but got the backup first. I consider it an essential tool to use with my Visor - it has saved me many times! The 8 meg module is helpful if you really want to carry tons of stuff around. I have about 40 games and a huge library that I carry around on it. It's not essential, but it is certainly nice to have. It has provided the extra "headroom" I've needed to load mapopolis on it too.

Get the backup module, it's cheap and when (not if) you loose your data away from your computer, you'll be glad you have it.

Cool

Definitly agree that the backup module should be the first purchase. You can recover your Visor with a hot sync, but if you are away from your PC, the Visor becomes useless if batteries go or hard reset is required.

I suggest getting the one you need more: if you're running out of space, get the Flash module first and migrate some applications. If not, get the backup module first.

Exclamation

The backup is essential.

I also wonder why the 8 meg flash module is $80 and the 8 meg backup is $40. The difference seems unreasonable.

The flash module has to integrate with the PalmOS memory manager. That dictates 16-bit wide flash memory that is linearly addressable and also imposes a higher speed requirement (users don't expect to see a slow down when they run an app out of flash).

The backup module can use whatever architecture is cheapest since only Handspring's backup/restore software interfaces to it. The memory in it can also be significantly slower. If you look at flash chip prices, you'll find at least a 2x difference between the slow and fast parts.
