Hi! I will be overseas from March to end of May. I don't want to bring my Visor for fear of it getting stolen or damaged. I don't know what I should do though re: what to do special prior to leaving. Is there a protocol (ie, should I put in new batteries prior to leaving and just trust that everything will be okay or is there something else that I need to do?) Thanks a lot!

I would suggest doing a complete backup of all data on the device (make sure everything is backed up). Then, remove the batteries and lock the Visor away where it would be completely safe (don't want it to get stolen while you're gone). Upon returning, install a fresh set of batteries and hotsync to restore everything. Leaving batteries (even new ones) in that long might work, but why risk it? Pretend it's Ichabod Crane, put it to sleep, and wake it when you get home!

For the complete Back-up I would reccomend getting a Back-up module, and testing to make sure it works before you take out the batteries for the last time.

Backup Module

I second Ben's recommendation of using a backup module (Great idea to test it first, too). You might want to stick it in your safe deposit box while you're gone.

Have you looked into the PDA insurance policies out there? I don't know much about them, but that might be an option to protect you if you decide to take your Visor along. You still ought to do the backup thing, though.

I think the batteries will hold for 3 months if it never gets turned on.

There's little risk, either. Do a hotsync and then put it away somewhere where no one will be able to get to it.

Either it will be okay in 3 months or you will have to replace the batteries and reload.

If you remove the batteries now, then you WILL have to reload everything. This way, at least you have a chance.

I agree with Rolando, re: batteries. Put in fresh set before you go and it should last the 3 months. The ones in my old Palm III is currently ticking on a pair that's closing on 4 months. Which reminds me I should replace it...

This is what I would do (and have done in a limited fashion with my Palm III, which I never use but keep around just in case my Visor is unusable/lost):


1) If you're currently overclocking, return the Visor to it's normal clock operations (it'll help on the batteries)

2) Sync to get everything backed up to the desktop computer.

3) Copy the user directory to a safe location (and if needed, archive to CD-R or other hard-to-destruct media. This step should be self explanatory...for most people, the data is what is important. If your PC deep-sixes on you and/or a backup module disappears while you're gone, then the archive media is your last resort).

4) Then, replace your Visor's batteries with a fresh pair.

5) Lock it up.


Upon your return, replace the batteries with a fresh set and you should be good to go.

On my Palm III, I even went as far as turning the sounds/alarms off and reducing the auto-off timer to 1 minute.

Good God, man, what are you thinking??? I couldn't bear to be apart from the thing, especially while traveling overseas. My little buddy (my Visor, you sickos!) is absolutely essential!

Now that I've finished my tirade, get the backup springboard and use it. It saved my life this weekend! When you've finished baking up, pop new batteries into your Visor and lock it up. Three months shouldn't be a problem!

Hey PaulD, I had a Peugeot 505 wagon. It was the absolute slowest car I've ever owned, but it was also the most comfortable too. If they still sold new ones, I would buy one!

Get two backup modules and insurance on the visor. Use one of the backups and place somewhere safe at home, then take the visor and the other backup module with you!

If you're relying on the Hotsync, be sure to download a trial of BackupBuddy. The Hotsync on mine restored several programs i had already deleted, but BackupBuddy worked perfectly. I'm not sure exactly sure how you could then restore without registering, but you could at least copy the app databases to the main palm dir.
