-- MP3 player without Snap-in? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14217)

Here's a stupid question: Is it possible to play mp3's without the mp3 snap-in's? I guess I don't understand what the snap-in brings to the picture. (other than a headphone jack, what else?)

No, it's not possible. The modules add three vital components:

1) Headphone jack. The built-in speaker won't provide the quality of sound you need.

2) Memory. MP3s are, on average, 4mb (4 minute song at 128kbps). That's half your RAM right there.

3) And most importantly -- processing power. There is *no way* the chip in your Handspring has enough power to decode an MP3 in realtime. My 66mhz 486 had trouble with it, even.

To expand on CrayDrygu, using the SoundsGood module as an example, for the $150 you are paying for:

1) the headphone jack
2) 64MB of memory, enough to store approximately an hour of "normal quality" MP3s
3) a processor that actually does the MP3 decoding and playback. Since it's a separate processor from what's inside the Visor, you can actually play songs while using your Visor for other tasks.

The SoundsGood also includes some flash ROM, so the MP3 playback software doesn't take up any memory on the Visor itself.

I guess the PocketPC processors are fast enough for MP3 playback, but even with them you'd probably want some extra expansion memory to store the music files...
