Cool

Has anyone heard of this yet?

Search for the Innogear product using the menu on the page.

These tiny drives allow you to store 500 meg of data and are each around the size of a quarter. Innogear appears to have a concept model for a Springboard module that allows them to be read by the Handspring devices. Maybe it will include the features of the MiniJam too.

PDABuzz.com had a mention of a Dataplay compatible minijam spotted at CES this week, so either that one has the capabilities or they're retrofitting the Minijam to allow Dataplay storage instead of MMC. This sounds like a killer idea, and it appears that Innogear isn't hyping it yet, so maybe they've learned from their Sixpak fiascos.

Question DataPlay Module

TWICE (This Week in Consumer Electronics) reported in this week's CES issue that HandSpring was developing a DataPlay SpringBoard, but there were no specifics. Elsewhere, it's mentioned that the DataPlay hardware (for any capacity) won't be available until September (Q3).

My question is - since DataPlay is a disk-based medium, wouldn't the power requirements be the same or simlar to a Microdrive?

It probably has it's own internal power supply, that's why it's so big. I bet it either has rechargeables or uses AA's or AAA's.

According to DataPlay's technical specs, read/write typical power consumption is 160mW. That's an average current draw of less than 50mA which is well under the Springboard slot's 100mA max. However, there are no specs for peak current so it's still impossible to say if it will be "Springboard compatible".

If it also has the same functions as the minijam (and possibly other functions) , I'd bet it pushes it way over the power limits of the springboard slot specifications. My minijam draws a lot of power just by itself.

I was interested by this springboard till I read James's review and discovered it has "ContentKey" -- Forget it now, unless it's going to be sold dirt cheap (which I also doubt).. I try not to support devices with built in copy protection hardware. Just another DIVX (although not nearly as bad).

Since its from Innogear, I'll believe it exists when I see it on store shelves.
