Question

My Visor synchs fine with the serial cradle, but will not work with the USB cradle on my desktop. I'm using Win 98 Second Edition with all the updates. I know the USB port works, as my printer is connected to one of the two USBs and I've switched them.

I'd try it with my laptop to be sure the USB cradle is bad, but you guessed it, the laptop runns NT 4, so that's why I have the serial cradle on hand.

I reinstalled the software twice and rebooted many times, as MS requires, but so far no good. Any Thoughts.

Hi,
You might try to right click on the hot/synch icon in the system tray. Make sure that local USB is checked along with local serial. This activates the USB synch. If that doesn't help make sure all the contact pins look OK on the cradle and aren't "squished" and try to hold the Visor down and hot synch in case it isn't sitting in the cradle correctly.

Have you tried the 'soft-reset the Visor while it's in the cradle' trick? Many people have said it worked for them.

Well, I had this problem myself and thus I decided to call for Support. However, I had to wait for 30 mins before being able to talk to anyone. Anyways, the workaround to USB problem is this:

1. Soft reset your Visor.
2. Open REGEDIT in Windows 98. (Be careful if you are new to Windows registries. Be sure to make backups)
3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\USB\
4. Delete the entry: VID_082D&PID_0100.
5. Close REGEDIT.
6. Make sure Local USB is checked in your Hotsync Manager.
7. Perform Hotsync.

Hope this helps. It sure worked for me.

The soft reset worked great. Editing the registry was not necessary, but thanks to all for your help.

The Regedit worked for me; thank you much for posting this. I had given up after holding for an hour for tech support at Handspring.

I've had to use a soft reset several times. Apparently from what I've been told by Tech Support, the Visor HotSync freezes up, requiring a soft reset to fix the problem. No big deal though :-) I still am very happy with my Visor.

Thanks, Shanpin for your help. Hot Syncing stopped working for me, but once I followed your steps, I can do it again!

I hadn't been able to hot sync since Jan 10th. The soft reset worked for me as well. Thank You!

I kept trying to call Handspring support, but without a 1-800 number I'm not willing to hold for more than 15 minutes.
