Coming soon to your Handspring ... Penguins?!?

Article on Ziff-Davis talks about possibility of Linux being the next OS of choice for Handspring.

clicky

Personally, I'm not too excited. I've run Linux at home. Work on Unix machines at work. True, they are still better than Windoze at doing real work but on a Handheld?

If Handspring can design a GUI interface for Linux that is as simple and functional as Palm OS I might jump on the bandwagon. If not, I'll be looking at Clies.

Have you seen or heard anything about the Sharp Zaurus PDA? That's running Linux, and it's got some pretty good reviews over here in the UK. Good specification too, and loads of software included as standard. It retails at about 450 here, but bear in mind that we ALWAYS pay way over the odds for equipment on this side of the atlantic - what sells for $500 in the US usually ends up at 500 ($775) over here (ouch).

I can probably find one of the magazine articles if you're interested in seeing what they say about Linux on a handheld.

The writer of the article is totally disregarding the personalities behind Handspring. Handspring was founded by people (Jeff Hawkins and others) who were the original architects of PalmOS. Hawkins' philosophy of what a PDA should do (at least as he's publicly stated it) doesn't include multimedia, multitasking, or even a file system.

The fact is that Handspring has been perfectly content to stick with PalmOS 3.5 - adopting PalmOS 4.x for the Treo 90 only because it gave them the SD support that the public (not Handspring) demanded. I can see no logical reason why HS would even consider burning a lot of R&D to roll a brand new OS/GUI/application suite when they seem perfectly happy with what PalmOS brings to the party.

Cool

Well, I'm just hoping that Palm and Handspring would wake up and start getting back their "lost" market share.

Maybe OS 5 will give Handspring a chance to make another comeback?

Or is Handspring going to stick to their Treo line of devices, which IMHO, are not good enough to compete with SONY's.

WAKE UP HANDSPRING!!!!!
