-- memplug: run programs from it? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13013)

New memplug is cool, but can I copy programs (DateBk4, Noah dictionary and database) to the SmartMedia card, and then run those programs from the card?

Short answer: No

However, the bundled movie and jpeg viewer programs do support reading directly from the card, and more applications are in development.

Don't forget the ability to read text files directly from the card too. It isn't a current feature but they say it will be released soon for free.

Can files be mode directly from a PC to this storage device without doing a hotsync operation?

I asked the same question, and the answer is yes!

What applications directly transfers files from the PC to the memory device?

Windows Explorer

Wait a second ...
so if I install the MemPlug SB in my VDX and seat the VDX in a usb cradle, all I need to do to get files on the smart media card is use Windows Explorer?

You can move files using Windows Explorer only if you have a separate SmartMedia reader on your computer. It acts just as if you have another drive on your machine. Then when you insert the SmartMedia in the MemPlug you can transfer them to the Visor. Same is true for the CF MatchBookDrive adapters, etc.

You folks sound like you can already buy the MemPlug. Where? The MemPlug folks have procrastinated for over a week and a half after announcement, about having it on PalmGear H.Q. Anybody have any information?

You don't even need to hook up your visor to a computer at all!!

This will do the trick:

http://www.digitalfilm.com/products...ersal_body.html

It's what I use.. (for my SmartMedia & CF cards)
It's a tiny external drive, treats SmartMedia & CF like a floppy disk (however with MUCH greater storage!)

Is it technically possible to use the visor as the Smart Media reader?

Also I have read somewhere on VC that there was a way to move data directly from PC to CF or Smart Media storage. I tried doing a search but didn't get any relevant hits. Does any one know if there is software that can do this or am I just thinking of the Sounds Good module?

That's what the memplug does. You might be thinking of the KOPSIS FAfilemover for the compact flash boards.

The URL I provided above is for a reader/writer to allow you to move data from the PC to SmartMedia or CF. On my Windows PC, the device add 2 additional removable drives, L: and M:, (L: is for any smartmedia card in the device, M: is for any compact flash card in the device), all I have to do is copy a file (either thru windows explorer or drag & drop to either drive L: or drive M: (depending if I want to copy the file to a SmartMedia card or a Compact Flash card)

Once I copied the files I want (i.e. PDB, PRC, etc).. You can then put the card into the appropriate springboard and move the files into your visor!! (No hotsync required)

The process goes both ways..

Now the memplug goes a few steps further, in addition to putting PDB & PRC files on the smartmedia card, you can also put JPG and gMovie files.. The software that comes on the memplug can see the JPG & gMovie files on the smartmedia card without having to move it into the Visor's 8mb of ram! They are also working on software to allow you to read text files directly from the smartmedia card (again, no copying to the visors memory required, all the current compact flash card solutions all require that the program or file be copied into the Visors memory before it can be seen by the Visor.)

You could use the memplug to copy files from your PC to the smartmedia card, but you first have to hotsync them over to the visor first and you are limited to what file types you can hotsync, i.e. PDB, PRC, PQA.. you can't just hotsync any-ol'file to your visor then move it to the smart media card.. Additionally it would be very slow.. I highly recommend a separate READER/WRITER for about $70.. well worth the cost..

There are cheaper Smart Media only adapters out there. I really couldn't justify spending $70 on a separate reader so I looked around and found some that sell around $25-$35. Here is one I found at Outpost.com, I'm sure there are others: http://shop2.outpost.com/product/74458

USBFilemover is the type of functionality that I am searching for, although I don't know if this application supports the memplug module. In anycase there should be no technical limitations to creating a piece of software to transfer data to/from PC and memplug.
