-- Win98 peer-to-peer network (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=8875)
I have a Win98 peer-to-peer network setup at home between my P233 desktop (main), the wife's P166 laptop, and the kids 486/66 (yes, I still have one that works
). All 3 machines are running Win98; SE on the main desktop with ICS enabled.
Neither the laptop or kids machines will allow me to drag-and-drop files over the network. Nor can I copy and paste them from one machine to another... can't even use the menu commands to copy them. Explorer locks-up (not responding). I can, however, push them over from the main system with no problem at all.
Can anyone help explain what might be going on here? I've checked all the obvious stuff: MS client, file & print sharing, TCP/IP, and NetBEUI installed and enabled on all 3 machines. Can't seem to figure this one out.

try deleting one of the protocols... maybe the on you 'main' machine it has a different primary protocol than the others... I asumet he workgroup/domain settings are the same on all machines...

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?
One other thought if all of the machines are on the same workgroup...
...in a home-network scenario, check the bindings for NetBEUI and TCP/IP on all of the machines. Your NetBEUI bindings should only have the "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" checked.
But your TCP/IP bindings should not have these two services checked on any of the computers. If they are, I believe the "World of Microsoft" will attempt to use IP for file services on your intranet (home network)-- which I don't believe fully support access levels and other niceities used for drag and dropping.
Since you're using ICS, isolate the file sharing traffic from the internet traffic and it becomes easier to troubleshoot.
Hope this helps.

my advice is to get rid of everything but TCP/IP on your machines, check automatic IP adress assignement, and disable DCHP in the WINS box (I think). WOrks for me on many different networks.
