-- Visor deluxe or Palm IIIX (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=1008)
I want to buy a PDA in the next few days. Visor Deluxe or Palm IIIX? My biggest concern in comparing the two are the postings I read concerning 1. screen scratching 2. the cracking and breaking of the visorcase 3.can I exchange data between a IIIe and a VDX 4.battery life5.tech support.
Visor Deluxe or Palm IIIx:
Visor Deluxe in a landslide: Why?
More memory, springboard, even the choice of colors all lean towards the VDx. And it is a little bit ourtside the norm and I like to be a bit off kilter compared to those around me.
1. screen scratching:
Palm IIIx is just as prone to scratching, that's why the fellow invented WriteRights
2. the cracking and breaking of the visorcase:
I have had mine for a month and no signs of cracking anywhere. The unit is solid and reliable, in my experiance anyway.
3.can I exchange data between a IIIe and a VDX:
I am fairly certain, yes. Same operating system so there should be no problem.
4.battery life:
I have used one+ sets of batteries since I received my unit and that is with about an hours use each day, first set lasted 2 1/2 weeks and the second set is at about 1/2 right now. This is far superior to any Win/Ce unit. But I can't say how it compares to the IIIx
5.tech support:
Getting much better but the wait on the phone can be a burden, from what I hear. I have not needed any tech help yet, if that's any encouragement.

Life is to short for boring food
From monitoring the messages posted here, it certainly appears that the graphite cases have fewer problems with cracking. Just something to keep in mind.
I've got a GVD, and I've not complaints . . .
re: IR data exchange with IIIe
I've done so without difficulty (see IR Beaming thread here or in the troubleshooting section).

As mentioned before, both the Visor and the Palm are equally prone to scratching.

I've had my Visor since December, and have had no signs of cracking or breaking.

You can beam data just fine (I've done it). Hotsynching data is is reasonably easy as well.

I get about 14 days of battery life on a set of Duracell Ultra AAA batteries, which is about par for the course.

Tech support leaves something to be desired, but I've read horror stories about Palm tech support as well.

For what it's worth, my recommendation is to get a Visor.

Hi There:
I've had my Visor Deluxe Graphite since late November and have had no complaints with it. In fact it is one of the few "toys" that I find quite useful and haven't gotten bored with.
With regard to your questions:
1. I've not noticed any scratching on my screen. But then I spent the extra money to get the premium 5 Stylus pack. Money well spent. Not only do you get a much better stylus, than the default plastic toy, but the Premium Stylus' point unscrews to reveal a built-in reset tool. No more having to scrounge for a paper clip. Also the top of the Premium Stylus unscrews to give you a small philips screew driver. If you do get the Premium Stylus spend 3-5 minutes buffing out the point on a pair of blue jeans. It will remove any extraneous plastic left over from the molding process.
2. I got the graphite model and have not seen any cracking nor have I suffered any breakage with the unit. I know there is a thread here that seems to indicate that some of the other colors may have more of a tendency towards cracking than does the graphite model.
3. No experiance/opinion.
4. I'm getting a consistant 30 days of battery life from 2 Energizer Alkaline AAA batteries.
5. I hear the phone support wait sucks, but that once you get through they seem to know how to solve your problem. Handspring also has a lot of good Tech Support information on their web site.
My two cents worth,
Jerry
