Now that's a creative and constructive way of channeling our two cents! I think you're on to something here.

Let's do that! Anyone else think that that would be good to show the collective mind of the Visor community? I think that Handspring would consider it a little more seriously if we collected some kind of short petition and submitted it to them. How would we go about this?

NOw why would Handspring offer upgrades when they are *still* selling the Visor deluxe and Visor for the same price they were selling it for a year ago? ANd why would Handspring offer upgrades when their competition..namely Palm does not offer it?

Want to upgrade? Sell your Visor on Ebay and buy a new one. That what I did.

They could use our working visor as parts for their new versions. I have heard the new platnium uses many of the same parts.

About the petition idea, lets try and get Visor Central involved in this too, they could help us out alot.

I in a sense get what your talking about:

My dad and I both got 2 meg visors at around the same time and my dad got talked in to buying one of thoes CompUSA return deals. When he learned about how stupid and pointless it was, he became determened to use it. when the new visors came out I expressed intrest in the platunim, and Dad aggreed to trade in his visor, buy the platunim (with me paying the diffrence) and take my two meg version. and the end resuld is I get a platnuim for 120 dollors

and no I'm not going to bet the warinty again

I, for one, wouldn't be too interested in buying a "new" Visor Deluxe/Platinum/Prism if it contained parts scavenged from used units, and I don't think Handspring should be petitioned to subsidize a program that would- (A)Cost them money and (B)Lead to a decline in quality if implemented as discussed in this thread.

An upgrade program would be nice for customers, but I still don't see how Handspring would stand to benefit other than the good karma of giving refurbs away to schools, charities, whatever. (Would the tax write-off really offset the cost of refurbishing all of the trade-in units, and the profit loss they'd be taking on the Platinum/Prisms they'd be sending to people?)

I want to upgrade, too, but I don't expect Handspring to take a loss (or at least cut in profit) on a new Visor because I can't be bothered to do the legwork to sell my VDx on ebay. Maybe it's the semantics that bug me; "petition" implies entitlement, and I don't think that people are entitled to a trade-in program just because it would be a nice price-break.

Have any of you that are interested in the PRISM stopped to think about what you are getting for that $449.00 price.

Like many of you, I was very enthusiastic about the PRISM.
Then foo fighter turned me onto something much more worth the money - The Compaq IPAQ! I get color, pocket word, pocket excel, 32mg memory, the fastest PDA processor
(233mghz I believe) on the market, built in voice recorder, built in media player that plays mp3's........

Many of the above items I would have to buy expensive springboards for if I bought the PRISM and everyone knows about the doc creating/editing/transferring to word problems with the palm OS.

The expandability is similar to the Visor, but for $50.00 more, I am going with IPAQ IF I CAN FIND ONE! It's one of the most requested PDAS right now.

I have read many reviews and most people that gave up the visor or palm are very, very happy!

Just something to think about.

First and most importantly, the PIM functions suck, and this after all is the main purpose for owning a handheld device in the first place. Pocket Outlook is far slower and more difficult to access, use, read, customize, and synchronize than its Palm counterparts. It is sheer hell to use.

Even after I get my pocket pc, I will continue to scan the boards as there is alot of information and to see what is happening.

What I can't understand is why people like your self feel the need to question why someone might be posting on this board. Is it exclusive to you?

I feel absolutely no desire to go on an Amiga board and tell them that I think it's silly to champion a system that hasn't been supported for years. I would consider this weird behavior. If I were to go to an Amiga board, it would be because I'd like to hear about their experiences with their systems; and I don't see how I would 'get information' by saying something like,

I choose to continue reading these boards becuase I can and I want to.

Although I don't work for Microsoft, I do work with people that feel the need to state an opinion merely for the sake of stating it -- for self indulging reasons.

I know there are many new Visor users who simply don't know there are choices and I used to be one of them. I have gleaned valuable information from visorcentral and am stating an opinion, which is what these boards encourage. When James (or another moderator) tells me what I'm doing is inappropriate, I will stop ( and so would many others).

Just like anyone else, you have the choice to not read, not agree or not respond to it.

I have read many posts that make me angry or I strongly disagree with, but I don't feel the need to act on impulse and attack it or the person for expressing an opinion. I simply move on - as you should.

Fair enough. Are you going to back up your opinions or support them in any way? I'm still waiting for an explanation of "the many shortcomings of editing documents." I know there are several, and I'm curious to know if you are aware of any others.

Now now -- I'm requesting clarification of your original post.

Were you aware that the iPaq's MP3 player skips when you toggle to another application?

Were you aware there are roughly 7,000 software titles available on PalmGear and about 150 on PocketGear?

Have you ever noticed that WinCE enthusiasts seem to be unable to point to any concrete functionality WinCE offers which the Palm does not? Personally, I'm aware of three: a much better screen, the ability to open email attachments (which may or may not be offered for the Palm OS now), and the essential ability to play Flight Simulator during boring meetings.

Handspring's Lack of Response

I believe Handspring has just missed an opportunity. I asked about the possibility of an upgrade path, tading in your VDx for a more powerful model.

Many companies are doing it, such as AT&T wireless, etc.

Here's is Handspring's response:

"Thank you for your email. We are not implementing a trade-in/upgrade program. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you have further questions, please reply to this email.

Handspring CustomerCare"

BAD IDEA! I hope someone sends these to Handspring. They may have just lost me as a customer when it's time to reinvest the money in PDA technology!

Well, then I guess Palm Computing, HP, Casio, and Compaq, TRGPro, and Sharp just lost you as a customer too... they don't offer trade-ins or upgrades either.

With the exception of the bundled internet access 'lease' type deals offered by Gateway and a few other companies, I don't know of any PC manufacturers that let you trade in last year's PIII 450 for this year's PIII 900... why is Handspring (or any PDA maker) expected to be different? I'm not contesting peoples' right to this opinion; I just don't understand it. I'll say it again... would I trade up if such an option were available? Probably. It would get a Prism into my hot little hands a few months sooner than anticipated. Am I entitled to such a program just because I'd like to trade up? No.

And BTW, why did you title your post 'Lack of response'? Handspring replied to you, it just so happens that you didn't like the reply.. not the same thing.

No they aren't. They're doing the "pay us $40 a month and we'll pretend to give you a deal on a phone" sales pitch. There is no reason for Handspring TO give out upgrade prices. No one else does (does Palm? Compaq?). Besides, it's not very feasible.
