-- Why does the Edge cost twice as much as the Deluxe? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12743)

What features does it have to justify the $400 price tag? I know it must have a 33Mhz or faster proc but only has 8MB of memory and does even do springboards right. Why not get full blown color for $50 more?

Arrow Meta and thin

A lot of people on this board want a mettalic case and something that is more portable ie thinner... the Edge fits that bill it seems.

Remember too that we have no hard facts about the functionality of the Visor Edge, just pictures of it. There was some rumor about its features (monochrome screen, OS version, etc.) but for all we know there might be some amazing feature we don't know about yet.

I am reserving judgement on the unit until I hear what it will do. Certainly (from my budget-conscious pragmatic point of view) simply making the colors different and making it thinner and lighter doesn't justify the price hike. (Others feel differently.)

That doesn't mean they should charge $400 for it! I always thought the Palm V was overpriced, but when it came out I suppose it was harder to make then a III. Now there is no excuse for a slimmer unit to cost so much more. It's been done before. As it stands now the Platinum is overpriced, it should be lowered $50 and the Edge should cost between $300 - $350 (added cost due to the battery and the design cost I suppose).

I hear you. But for that price, I'd want something really amazing, like an attachment to allow one to surf the internet telepathically.

As much as I agree, unfortunately it's a cold business fact that Palm V series is Palm's best selling product line -- despite the fact that when it was released, I thought the $500 price tag would bury it. If the market will bear a high price, that's what the company will charge (which can backfire: witness the once-$449 Palm IIIc). Handspring sees the opportunity to tap into the same market for the affluent. Palm and Handspring are in the business to make money, and to maximize profits, they tend to be ruthless in pricing their products. They're not interested in whether or not you like the price if you buy it; they only care about your money. I'm sure anyone who owns HAND stock would appreciate that.

Maybe 400$ "only" for a Visor is much, but think about the possible features of the new Edge.
I think a Dragonball processor will be included, and maybe a Li-Polymer rechargeable battery (think about the Edge's form factor, AAA batteries would be too big).
Next thing: Doesn't the Edge look like made of Aluminium? A new Visor made of this material would look much better and be much stronger than a VDX.

Hmmm...

Hmmmm.... I will consider buying an Edge if:

1) It offers me more functionality than a Platinum.
2) It costs only $50 more than the Platinum.

Won't happen? I guess I'll stick with my Deluxe for the time being.
