Hi

I have the backup module BUT is it worth it?

What does it back up? Only the data from the apps that come with the visor? I think that backupbuddyng might be a better way to spend $40. What you you think or know on this subject? If the backup springboard is only going to give me half of my data and none of the apps that I have downloaded I really do not see the value of it.

If it's on your Visor, the Backup Module backs up everything. I use it all the time for beta testing, and it restores all of my data, whether it's built-in apps or 3rd party programs.

In my opinion, it's way, WAY worth it. It's a much faster way to back up than via hotsynch, and if (heaven forfend!) your whole unit is smoked, you can get a new one and have everything from the old one in it in seconds.

Backup Module = BEST module (to me)

I've had to do a hard-reset 3 times now. Of course 2 of those times, I was away from my PC. The Backup Module restored everything on my Visor, exactly as it was at the time of backup.

Another save for me: After seeing what Visors could do (3 people already owned them), my job purchased a few Visors for some of the Tech staff - without asking if they could/would use them. It just so happens that one of these people doesn�t use his (can you believe it? It just sits in his desk drawer, empty of info. ) One day I left my Visor at home, and didn't realize it until I was at work (~30 minutes away) Since it wasn�t being used, I borrowed the co-worker�s Visor, popped my Backup Module into it, and I had �my� Visor for the day. At the end of the day, I backed-up again (I added/deleted some stuff), then hard-reset the borrowed Visor and returned it. When I got home, I �restored� to my Visor, so I had all the day�s changes, then HotSync�ed with my computer, so my PC had the changes also.

basically I have nothing to add to this.... The backupmodule is worth its money bigtime!

The module is really great when you are away from your PC. If you need to do a hard reset (say some program crashed), you can get everything back off your backup module.

Without it, your visor would be mostly useless until you can get to your PC.

If you can only afford one, I'd recommend the module over BackupBuddy, but I use both.

BackupBuddy is nice because it works automatically, every time you sych. It's a no brainer. As I said above, the module is great for when you can't get back to your PC. If you only have the module, you may want to set yourself a schedule for when you back it up, maybe every night, or maybe every time you synch.

I hotsync almost religiously at least once a day.

Yesterday I was in meetings all day and didn't even power up my laptop but I sure added a lot of info to my Visor.

This morning I dropped my Visor and had to do a hard reset to stop the looping resets.

Right now I'm thankful that my Visor even works! But I have to reconstruct everything done in the last 38.5 hours.

I will be buying a backup module very soon!

By the way, alexstjo, if you want to sell your module, let me know how much!

The Backup Module is great and so is Backup Buddy. However, if you're away from your computer, and don't have the module with you when you crash, soft resets rarely do the job. Hard resets loose everything, WARM RESETS often save the day. You can find this on Product Support.

1. Press and hold the Page Up button on your organizer.
2. Using the reset tip tool (or a similar object without a sharp tip), gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back of your organizer.
3. When the Palm Computing Platform logo appears on the screen, release the Page Up button.

It can save your day. After the reset, be patient, it sometimes takes a little while.

There must be a way

I want to add my kudos for the backup module. Even if you have a desktop-based backup, there's no substituting for the ease of popping in the module and having everything safely backed up. I keep four Visors going for four different people and the module is invaluable. In addition, I make it a regular part of changing the batteries to backup on the module first. Then, if something goes wrong, I am completely safe. Sure, you can (and should) backup on your desktop before changing batteries, but we all know that's not always possible or practical. IMHO, the backup module is an essential element for any Visor owner!

Thanks Ynot. I tried the warm reset with no luck. It still looped and looped... I have good luck with warm resets in the past though.

backup is key

I had a terrible experience with my Palm III. I was switching jobs and didn't have my hot sync set up in my new computer yet. I put some faulty batteries (just bad luck) in my Palm when the old ones died and yes - I lost it all.

I vowed to not get a new PDA until this sort of thing was fixed. So I recently got the visor because the backup module is the answer.

What do people use Backup Buddy for? I mean, it's not that hard to make sure the backup bit is set on everything. Or does it back up more than regular hotsync?

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

My visor only keeps a charge for about a minute.

After that minute, all is lost...

After my experience with the backup battery losing its charge on a Casiopaea, I much prefer the Palm technique. The chance of a capacitor failing is much lower than a backup battery, and a minute is more than enough time to swap a pair of AAAs.

Yup.

When I first got my VDX, I was trying to beam Launcher III from my Palm III to it and it failed in the middle because I didn't have them aligned properly. Unfortunately, I still had a Launcher III icon on my Visor that wasn't complete and I couldn't delete it. After doing a hard reset and it was still(!) on there, I pulled the batteries for a few minutes, and it was still there! I had to wait about 20-30 min for it to fully drain the capacitor.
