... that don't cause any problems?
I had to install Streak hack, but are there any other hacks that are useful and don't interfer with the handspring rom?

thanks

Good point.
Once I got my Visor, I quickly loaded it with 7 or 8 hacks. After some time, I had trouble syncing. After removing the hacks, it worked better (I guess a defective unit also was responsible for my problems).
Now I am only running BatteryHack, and everything seems to be OK.
How about starting a Hack works/doesn' t work list here?
It would be much easier than trying all the hacks out one after the other...

IMHO, a must have is a hack to invert the backlight. The normal backlight pretty much sucks... I used GreenLightHack before, but as I said I had problems. I installed it again today - I' ll see if this was the hack that interfered with my ROM.

Question

As a "hack newbie" I'd love to hear everyone's list of must-have hacks.

Posted by yucca on 03-05-2000 08:28 PM:

Lightbulb

We don't need another Hack does/doesn't work list. Please use the incompatibility list: http://www.visorcentral.com/silindex.php3

My must-have list:
PhlegmHack (a free "SwitchHack" - for rapid switching to and from apps)
HideIconHack (nice for hiding personal stuff when giving co-workers a peek at my Visor - especially nice for those apps that do not support the private record feature)
PadlockPlus (improves the Security app's ease of use - obviously not a complete security solution)
TrekSoundsHack (for occasional fun, and for driving co-workers nuts)

What I'm still testing:
MiddleCapsHack (faster capitalization)

Sync Advice:
I've had occasional problems syncing with all of the above hacks. My SOP is to disable all hacks before syncing, and this has virtually eliminated any sync problems.

ShiftHack - overrides the automatic shift feature - allows you to turn Caps on and off as you please. I tried MiddleCaps but guess I've been using ShiftHack so long it seems easier to me.

TealEcho - allows you to see on-screen the graffiti strokes as you enter them -really helped out my graffiti recognition and speed in the beginning now it's mostly useful when I start to revert to my old sloppy ways.

PopUp Calculator - pops up the calculator as an overlay of current open application - you don't have to exit an app everytime you need the calculator, also allows you to copy/paste from the calculator

PopUp Note - works same as above but with the MemoPad - great for making quick notes.

PopUp Favorites - Brings up user customized list of most used apps to launch withhout having to go back to the main launcher.

ScreenShot Hack - not an essential but useful if you need it. Allows you to capture screen shots of your visor - has a utility to convert the shot to .bmp files after you hotsync them to your pc.

If you want to use the FASTEST input method on your Visor, either Fitaly or FitalyStamp are indespensable. They can be found on www.fitaly.com. FitalyStamp is still in beta but should be shipping soon. There is a slight learning curve but it's well worth it.

The best free hack is AfterBurner II which overclocks the Visor up to 29MHz. MenuHack is a close second.

The PopUp set of hacks from Bozidar Benc are excellent. My favorite is PopUp Favorites.

TealLock is a good security hack -- you can enter your password just using the buttons on the Visor. I don't have to encrypt anything -- I know that my device is secure.

I use:

1) MiddleCaps Hack - convenient
2) TrekSounds Hack - what can I say? I'm a big Trek fan
3) MenuHack - gives the Visor one of OS3.5's useful features
4) InvertHack - because the secret dot shortcut doesn't work on the Visor

My list:

MenuHack: All this does is bring up an applications menu with a tap on the App's Title Bar as opposed to using the menu silk-screen icon. This may not survive, I use the silk often as not.

AppHack: A method of switching between applications using the hardware buttons, I am testing this one, it now takes 2 pressess on the buttons to bring up an app but it allows the buttons to launch 24 different apps instead of 4.

PhlegmHack: I love this freeware substitute for Switch Hack. Allow you to define keystrokes to launch applications and easily brings up a menu of 10 last used apps. This makes it a real snap to switch between applications and is the one I tend to prefer over AppHack.

FindHack: (Registered) Find replacement.

ClearHack: Testing, this is to get rid of the lines in MemoPad and in other applications. I'm not sure whether I find those lines a great enough "annoyance" to register this "solution."

Cool

My Hack list:

Menu Hack: allows you to tap the top of the screen to drop the menu, like Windows or Mac users would expect.

SafeHack: automatically hides all your private records when you power down. How often do you remember to do this manually?

SwitchHack: a more expensive version of PhlemHack. It allows one stroke switching between applications. It does seem to have a problem with apps on the 8meg FlashRam springboard, though.

TealGlance: When you turn on your Visor, it shows you your appointments and ToDo list.

xstitcher -
what version of those hacks are you using? I seemed to have trouble with the version of PopUpCalculator I was using.

The following is a list of Hacks/Utilities
I have found to be useful on my Visor.

Battery Meter Hack -- Displays either a percentage of battery life left (my favorit) or current battery voltage.

ScreenWrite Hack -- Lets you use the full screen for inputing you Graffiti.

TealScript Utility -- Replaces the default Gaffiti recognition system with a more customizable Graffiti system.

Runtime/Laufzeit Utility -- Keeps a graphical record of battery voltage plus a record of when the batteries have been changed.

OnlyMe Utility -- Autolock and password utility for accessing your Visor (or other PDA). Has a nice delay function that lets you specify how long of a delay between turning off you PDA and enabling the lock.

STRIP Utility -- Neat tool for password protecting importaint information. STRIP (Secure Tool for Recalling Important Passwords) was designed for allowing the user to securely protect login/password information. It is also great for storing PIN codes, credit card information, banking account information, or basically any information of that sort which you want on your PDA, but also want it secure. Plus the information is beamable.

HandyShop Application -- A real nice shopping list application.

My two cents worth.

Question

I was going to try using EvPlugBase to install some Hacks. The URL I have is:
http://www.evscl.com/download/evplugbase.zip

but it seems to be down. Is anyone aware of an alternative URL for it?

Homer,

EVPlugBase is neat and has some nice features but... it wreaked havoc on my IVDx... numerous crashes and resets. I think there were some other threads here about it as well...

Thumbs up

I won't bore you with my list of hacks, but I'll just highly recommend you get MiddleCapsHack. You will use this constantly and will save you unnecessary graffiti strokes. This is the MUST HAVE hack.
