Prism Battery

I have a handspring prism which i recently changed the battery pack in. The stock battery pack is 3.6v/1500mah the battery i put in is 3.5v/1000mah but it seems to power up fine. I was wondering if i try to charge the new battery pack in the prism will the prism over charge the battery since it thinks that a 1500mah battery is in there or will the battery be smart and know that its getting too much of a charge?
